So I asked you guys what to paint in terms of fanart/redesignsand I chose one of the most iconic evil guys
I'll try to pick up some more of the suggestions though. Thanks again, folks!
I ended up sticking to the original design mostly although I had started out with plans to make it a redesign. So it resulted in this weird mix. Ah, whatever.
1.5h, it's been a while since I made a speedpainting...
it's clearly not the best I could do. Careless planning without concept.
Lol, maybe this will get me hired to work on some SW property again

edit: not sure how he looked feminine (I must have been drawing one too many girls), but I made some tweaks, also changed the helmet which I realized was really off after I checked some ref.

I'm really no expert in anatomy nor in art so I'm not really sure about why I see it like this. I'd say the problem is that he is too lenghtened.

Though you have the "power V" composition working, something about the pose strikes me as almost feminine. I see the cape has been tattered, but perhaps it should be longer, and stretch to the edges of the canvas in a black consuming swathe. It would draw attention away from his legs, -which may be where I'm picking up the fem vibe- and give Vader his usual dominating presence.

Vader's cape is usually bigger, gives him the whole I'm a badass look. Either that or he's just compensating for something else.

the shortened cape makes him look kinda less harmful, maybe even womanly (with that left hand gesture, too)
I suggest you make the lightsaber longer and give his skull more room. I know, it's a redesign, but this is just my suggestion

Maybe people have such a fixated notion of him looking powerful and manacing that any deviation from this is perceived as wildly odd.

looks better now with the helmet and hand.
Lucas uses unmistakeble sings in his character designs that show who they are (the name "Darth Vader" alone! The Dark Father, names are Omens in the Starwars universe). Vader is huge, dressed in black, the mask never revealing any of his emotions (which distiguishes Sith from Jedi, who are not allowed to have emotions). A totally intimidating figure. Even when he is in a kneeling or defeated position he is still a threatening giant.
That makes a complete makeover redesign really complicated. You cannot make him a sleak panther-like shape without people thinking he lost some of his manliness through it. You can not draw a pose with his sword behind him (like a faked willing-for-peace gesture) without taking much of his dangerousness. He is a goddamn ex-Jedi with a lot of hatred, disgust, a weird sense of duty (towards the Emperor) and a couple o' trust issues, always ready to strike. He IS powerful and menacing.
From far my first impression of his pose in your drawing (which is good btw, in case I forgot to mention) is that of a person letting himself fall off a roof backwards (the pavement angel suicide pose thing...)

Thanks for the bg info. It's true, Vader is a character with very fixed design and concept. A design that differs too much would not be Vader in essence but something else.

I know there's a lot of off-character/off-canon fanart of many characters, but you see, sometimes you'll find no fans for off-canon interpretations

To me, this looks pretty much like how Lady GaGa would look in a Vader costume... dunno how you pulled it off, but it's really cool.

Awesome confrontational pose and digging the way you've reworked the torso and arms! Have to agree that the helmet looks too short - it loses the imposing size of the samurai helmet that it's based on.

dunno where all those 'feminine' comments came from - I just took the impression this was not long after the conversion from Anakin to Vader, and still had somewhat youthful proportions...
