It is true. Approximately 2/3s of Mytilene are of volcanic origin. Near Sigri, there are huge fossil forests. We visited two of those, the one near the sea. Of the most interesting stuff, there was the bottom part of an ancient cinnamon tree, it had a diameter of 14 metres. It was calculated that it should have been about 100m tall.
Really impressive stuff. Have some photos of that place, perhaps will upload some.
