Sure, modern inventions made the horse trooper obsolete--from a purely technological POV. When the Europeans tried using cavalry in the opening of WW1 they quickly realized you cannot charge through a Maxim gun's field of fire--not to mention barbed wire & reinforced trenchworks. But even then, it did work outside the Western theater--Google "cavalry charge Beersheba". There was only one trench in the area where it happened & the Turks were so shook up they forgot to adjust the sights on their rifles, so once the Aussies & Anzacs were under 1,800 meters & closing, most of the bullets just flew overhead. The bulk of their casualties were incurred after they charged...when they went into the trench, in close combat with the Turks. Bayonet wounds don't tickle!

I think it's the psychological factor of the charge itself is more important than the damage made by it. You see I'd shit myself If I saw a line of cavalry charging towards me
