I was tempted to call this pic "Ye old torture devices" but decided against it
But anyway this pic is all about one of my favourite type of petticoats, called the "birdcage petticoat" for obvious reasons 
it can be made out of iron or steel and will most definitely keep your pretty ball gown nice and puffy The drawback of this design though is that it's a solid piece of metal and it wont allow you to bend or sit and you can forget about running or climbing stairs too, even getting through most doors is now impossible It's completely impractical and that's why I love it Combined with a super tight corset and a posture collar, further adds to your now perfect posture and your incredible discomfort and then your new frilly ball gown will be sewn onto you, to make it as form fitting as possible and also makes you completely trapped in your new invisible prison This guy didn't care about any of that however, he was just regretting cheating on his wife, who just so happened to be the head of a historical clothing museum and was now taking out her revenge on her cheating little husband
Anyway I hope you all like the pic

I have to agree with u loving the impracticality of it, but I would love to wear a dress like that I wouldn't cheat I would of begged the minute I found out about her access to dresses like that

There's an artist you would love.~ I forget his name, but he did a large series of kinky pictures where the women were subjected to shaping, restrictive wear that permanently modified their body shapes. He was particularly popular for breast stretching and things like that, but a lot of the devices just looked like corsets. ^^
And you could call this a hoop skirt... I'm not sure if cages technically fall under petticoats or not. I think petticoats are notoriously tulle or layers and layers of cheap cotton/satin, whereas any kind of solid reinforcement falls under hoop and cage shapes. I could be wrong.~ I'm not 100% on that.
