Description Is this really a tutorial? Or is it humor? A little bit of both, I suppose . . . in the tutorial section because it has more of a "how to" feel. :B

A lot of people, sometimes sarcastically, say that the best way to get popular on DA is to draw Naruto fanart, or tons of babes, or kawaii neko-chans.

To this I say: BAH!

For if drawing average-to-excellent Naruto fanart, babes, and kawaii neko-chans were truly the path to internet success, then quite a few artists out there would be much more famous than they are now.

No, my friends, the secret to getting noticed is this: GET PEOPLE TO NOTICE YOU!

For quite some time my account sat here with little more than the occasional offsite buddy (Y'all know who you are.) dropping by. And that was cool! But kind of lonely.

Then, once I started linking back to my things on other sites? BOOM! A relative flood of new watchers and friends.

So my advice to you is this: Get your art out there! "If you build it, they will come" does not apply to the internet.

Is there a fandom you draw a large amount of fanart of? Join a forum or community devoted to it, and post links to your work! Or track down the "art postings" section of a more general forum, and link to things there!

And don't forget to dabble in some on-DA exposure, too. Pop into the Thumbshare forum every once in a while, and see what threads are relevant to your work. Join a club on DA, and submit some art to that!

But most importantly, stick with your pals. John Q. "Kewl Pics" may favebomb your gallery, but the people who leave interesting and helpful comments are the ones who'll stick around for your next update. They make much better conversation, too. ;]

People who try to get popular on dA are (imho) repulsive and immature egomaniacs. I think the people who draw because they love it are the real artists, not because they want to be worshiped by all.

Sorry if this offends anybody, but seriously, what a bunch of desperate clods. Same goes for art thieves.

TT3TT I just wanna be popular so people would recognize me and my art. I want more people to see my works. (Even though I still don't have many...)

kimitama In reply to Chibi12 [2011-07-16 04:22:41 +0000 UTC]

And you want people to recognize you and your art why, exactly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chibi12 In reply to kimitama [2011-07-16 04:29:07 +0000 UTC]

I just want to know what they think of it, maybe point out a few things I messed up, or encourage me... My friends think I'm good, so I want to know what other people think of my art.

kimitama In reply to Chibi12 [2011-07-16 06:05:06 +0000 UTC]

In other words, you want your ego stroked.
Bro, seriously, in my experience, your friends pointing out your flaws doesn't help you at all- studying anatomy and tutorials, as well as practicing, does.

but people get a sense of encouragement from how many people look at their work....I'd be discouraged if my drawing was only looked at by 5 people, but if it was 500 then it would sort of confirm my belief that it's good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kimitama In reply to EM0RAINB0W [2011-07-27 21:06:38 +0000 UTC]

'People' don't, you do. I never check how many people, I don't give a shit. If your will to draw depends on how many people looked at your pretty picture for a nanosecond, then you're going to give up pretty quickly. The only people who should seriously be worrying about how their art is getting out is people who do art to put food on the table. Jesus H. Christ.

EM0RAINB0W In reply to kimitama [2011-07-27 21:17:51 +0000 UTC]

1. 'People' as in casual artists, not professionals.
2. duh. why else do companies advertise?

because I am bored I'm going to feed the troll... I never said they were. I was just assuming that someone new here, like me, would be nervous about putting their efforts on the internet. Who doesn't want to be worshipped by all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

kimitama In reply to EM0RAINB0W [2011-07-27 22:46:54 +0000 UTC]

1. Not all casual artists are obsessed with how many people are admiring their pretty pictures, speak for yourself.
2. Oh, pardon me, I assumed you didn't know this, given your tendency to generalize all artists, unemployed or not, into one group.

HinoNeko In reply to kimitama [2011-07-02 02:06:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I mean, it's one thing to wanna share your art with the world (and if you're trying to make money off commissions and whatnot, it helps to get your name out there!) but trying to be popular just 'cause "I WANNA" is kind of silly.

Eeveeinhoen In reply to ??? [2011-06-29 06:43:59 +0000 UTC]

so....how do you get ppl to notice you without them calling you an egomainac in the process?
and how do you get these so called "pals"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HinoNeko In reply to Eeveeinhoen [2011-06-29 23:40:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't think there'll ever be a way to completely stop people from calling you an egomaniac - if they want to call you that, they will, whether it's true or not!

But one way to get people to notice you - or your art, at least! - is to show it to a community dedicated to a theme.

For example, judging by your gallery, you like to draw Pokemon art! Luckily for you, DA is full of Pokemon fans. In fact, when you search pokemon in the official groups search, over 3000 different groups show up !

I would recommend checking some of those groups out and joining them. Once you're a member of a group (depending on how it's set up) you can submit your artwork to them, and then it will show up in the group's gallery for all the other club members to enjoy!

(Just make sure you follow the club's rules when submitting art - some clubs limit submissions to a certain number per week, others won't accept sketches and only approve finished artworks, etc.)

Sometimes when people like your art, they'll leave comments. If you like what they have to say, reply to them, and if you like their artwork, go comment on that! After some time you'll find there are certain people who you enjoy sharing comments with, and lo, ~*A FRIENDSHIP IS BORN!*~ :[)

But you have to admit (in MOST artists' galleries) the pieces that get the most attention are fanart.

Keep at it! Sometimes it's slow-going, but eventually people will discover your art.

And remember, a small number of good comments is much better than a large number of dull comments!

Aw, don't get so down on yourself! Maybe your first shot at comics won't do so well, but with practice you'll get better and better. (Just look at this image that was on the front page recently - it took six years, but the improvement is clear!)

Heck, even I've improved quite a bit from when I started "seriously" drawing a few years ago, and I've still got a ways to go myself! First efforts are rarely the best, but it's what gets you on the path to later success. :]
