Description
Is this really a tutorial? Or is it humor? A little bit of both, I suppose . . . in the tutorial section because it has more of a "how to" feel. :BA lot of people, sometimes sarcastically, say that the best way to get popular on DA is to draw Naruto fanart, or tons of babes, or kawaii neko-chans.
To this I say: BAH!
For if drawing average-to-excellent Naruto fanart, babes, and kawaii neko-chans were truly the path to internet success, then quite a few artists out there would be much more famous than they are now.
No, my friends, the secret to getting noticed is this: GET PEOPLE TO NOTICE YOU!
For quite some time my account sat here with little more than the occasional offsite buddy (Y'all know who you are.) dropping by. And that was cool! But kind of lonely.
Then, once I started linking back to my things on other sites? BOOM! A relative flood of new watchers and friends.
So my advice to you is this: Get your art out there! "If you build it, they will come" does not apply to the internet.
Is there a fandom you draw a large amount of fanart of? Join a forum or community devoted to it, and post links to your work! Or track down the "art postings" section of a more general forum, and link to things there!
And don't forget to dabble in some on-DA exposure, too. Pop into the Thumbshare forum every once in a while, and see what threads are relevant to your work. Join a club on DA, and submit some art to that!
But most importantly, stick with your pals. John Q. "Kewl Pics" may favebomb your gallery, but the people who leave interesting and helpful comments are the ones who'll stick around for your next update. They make much better conversation, too. ;]

LOL! I'm new to DeviantArt, I just joined yesterday. After flicking through other tutorials, this one caught my eye. I'm not supposed to be looking at this but I did anyway. It really gave me a good laugh!

That's what I'm having problems right now is trying to get people to notice my artwork. I joined groups, I did the linking back from my tumblr to my DA account and I mostly get favebombs than comments, which is nice but I really like some written feedback. XD
As for the thumbshare, how does that work?

Ah, alas. Getting people to look at your art is relatively easy . . . getting them to give the kind of feedback you want is the hardest thing in the world! x[)
Thumbshare is an area in the forums where people make threads for you to post your artwork in. On the little side part of a deviation page, there's a field titled Thumb. In there is a code that you can copy and paste into comments in the Thumbshare forum to show off your art.
Just be sure to pay attention to what people are asking for in there - some threads are only meant for a certain medium or subject matter, and others will ask for you to include a code word in your post, to make sure you're not just spamming your art everywhere.
And of course, if there isn't a thread for the kind of art you want to show off, you could make your own and ask for others to contribute as well! :[)

True, but comments are something nice. XD
Okay, so far I posted my art in several thumbshare posts, and gotten a couple of viewers.
As for my own thread, I'll think about that. Thanks!

except for me with my classmates the reaction is usually "OMG THAT'S SOOOOOO GOOOD DID YOU SERIOUSLY DRAW THAT?!?!?!?!?! YOU SHOULD BE LIKE AN ARTIST OR SOMETHING"
And I'm like thinking, "Uh, naaaah, I found it on the ground -.-''

I joined DeviantArt to get my drawings out here, and the positive feedback from my close friends have given me the drive to keep practicing, but this still reminds me of how amazing it feels when someone in real life compliments my art, even if it is just fanart. I've just always been scared no one would like my art, and that's why I keep it on this site alone.

Hinoneko, can I ask you something? How do you submit fanart? Please tell me step-by-step.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
HinoNeko In reply to hajibloodplusfan [2010-06-01 04:12:23 +0000 UTC]
Well . . .
1) At the top of the site there's a drop-down menu titled "Submit." Hover over that and choose "Submit Art."
2) Upload your image in the section called "Which File?"
3) Click the "Choose" button in the "Category" section, select "Fan Art," and then narrow down the category you want until the "OK" button becomes clickable.
4) Take care of all the other informative things - Deviation Title, Artist's Comments, etc.
5) Fill out the Keywords! These will help people find your art when they search the site. For example, if you're submitting art of Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon, use keywords like sailor moon jupiter
6) Click the "Submit" button, and presto! Your art is live on the site. :]

But wait, what if it says, "add a file"? Do you have to scan your drawing?
