Martha was laying on Sami's couch, her feet dangling over the arm rest, her head resting in Sami's lap. Sami smiled down at Martha. His index finger was circling around Martha's belly button.

"Hahaha, it tingles!" Martha laughed.

"I'm sorry...." Sami mumbled and stopped the circling movement.

"No, it's ok, Sami. It feels nice. It's kinda cute how you are fascinated with my belly button."

"You know that born jinn don't have belly buttons. I was just curious."

"I must be quite different from the normal jinn you knew..." Martha said thoughtfully.

"Actually, you are. You might see yourself as a jinn, Martha, but you think very differently from a jinn, who grew up among jinn. Your human past has influenced you more than you know."

"I assume... How could I know how our kind used to live? You are the only jinn who could tell me." She smiled up at Sami.

"You really wanna know?" Sami asked.

"Sure. I wonder how jinn families live. If you live in cities, or where..? Please tell me what you know."

Sami smiled back. "You know, Martha, jinn don't live in families as you know it. We don't know the human concept of marriage." When he saw Martha's surprised expression, Sami quickly added "Don't worry, we know love. But the idea of forming a legal bond between a man and woman is rather alien to us. Still, we care about our children and try to rise them to be good jinn."

"Good to hear that." Martha said. "Do you have polygamy?"

"Not in the way you might imagine it now. There's no patriarch on top with his wives and children in one family. We live in big family groups consisting of several men, women and all of their children. It's possible that a male jinn would have children with several women, while one of these women has children not only with this one, but also with other males. And all live in one family group." Sami explained.

"Sounds like a hippie commune to me." Martha said.

"Hippie commune?" Sami asked.

"About 40 years ago, a movement started that didn't care about marriage and cherished free love. It didn't really change society, but there are still some communes left. The hippies dreamed about a society quite similar to that you grew up in. I guess you had a lot of brothers and sisters and half-brothers and half-sisters." Martha sounded a bit disappointed.

There were quite a lot of jinn who prefer a single partner. My parents were two of them. I think, it was mostly my mother who wouldn't share my father with another jinn." Sami said. "But he loved her and that was enough for him."

"I think I couldn't share you with another jinn, Sami. But did you have any sisters or brothers?"

Sami shook his head. "My parents had no other children. At least none before I was trapped in my lamp. Maybe they had other children later, I don't know." He sounded very depressed.

Martha stood up. She put her arm around Sami's shoulder. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. Wanna stop talking about your past?"

"It's ok. I'll answer any question about our society you ask."

Martha decided not to put salt in Sami's wound and slightly changed the topic. "You said jinn live in family groups. But do you live in cities or villages? Or where did you live?"

"My family lived in a rocky part of the desert you call Sahara today. Many jinn live like that. But there are small towns, too. These towns are places where jinn meet to trade and buy things. And where jinn are tried if they break one of the jinn laws."

Martha looked at him with astonishment. "You already told me that there were jinn laws we had to obey. But what kinds of punishment did we jinn have? Who were the judges? Oh, please tell me, Sami."

Sami smiled back. "Best I tell you what I saw, when I visited a jinn settlement with my parents for the first time."
