Sami continued his story. "One day, my parents took me on a short trip to the nearest settlement. My parents took all the crystals and desert glass they had grown over the last few months with them to trade it for other things we needed."

"Wait a second!" Martha interrupted him. "I thought we jinn can create everything we need with our magic?"

"That's true. But most of us specialize in a certain kind of magic. The manipulation of what humans call the "classic elements" were common. My parents specialized in the creation of crystals and glasses. We lived in the desert because we found all the raw materials there. And when we had produced enough, we exchanged them for all the things we needed. And so, we went to a place called Al'Amadina. It was located at the end of a very narrow ravine, hidden in a mountainous region of the desert."

"I guess it was hidden from humans, that way?" Martha asked.

"Yes, we tried to avoid humans whenever it was possible." Sami said.

"Because they enslave our kind?"

"Not only that. See, Martha, once we jinn ruled the earth. But humans took more and more land from us. They pushed us into isolated areas, like the desert. And since we are not allowed to kill, we avoided them, rather than fight back. Soon, we only lived in inaccessible places, like deserts and mountains. Only in very rare cases, did we allow humans to enter our places. And only if we really trusted them. Al'Amadina was such a place. It was hidden in the mountains at the end of a very narrow canyon. And when we went there, I would soon see a human for the first time in my life. I'll come to that later."

Martha nodded.

"When we arrived at the gate of Al'Amadina, one of the guards stopped us. My parents had to give them a few of their crystals, as a toll. They also got the name of a resident jinn, who would be their broker for today."

"Their broker?" Martha asked.

"It's a jinn employed by the jinn lord of Al'Amhadina. The broker jinn go around and find traders who are willing to exchange their goods. It's quite a challenging job. Often, a broker has to find three, four or more traders who are willing to trade their goods between each other."

"Didn't you know the concept of money?" Martha asked.

Sami shook his head. "Sadly, no. I learned that concept hundreds of years later, when I was a human slave. But that's another story. We jinn never invented money. Instead, we stuck to barter-trade. And, the jinn lords in their settlements played a vital role: They provided trading places, the brokers and also the necessary security. For these services, the jinn lords took their share as tolls from the traders. And now, I was about to experience a jinn market for the first time.
First, I was very impressed to see all the jinn. So far, I only knew my parents and a jinn family that lived not far away. Now, I saw hundreds of jinn. And, to my biggest surprise, I saw the first humans in my life. At the market, I saw two human men, one older, one younger, doing trades with one of the broker jinn. 'Dear friend, can you tell me what these humans are doing here?' I asked another jinn."

"They are traders who have Lady Amhadina's permission to trade here. They bring rare goods that we jinn don't produce", the other jinn explained.

"I thought it's forbidden for humans to come to our settlements?" I asked the other jinn.

"It's not part of the Great Law, but part of Lady Amhadina's Small Law. And she has given them a special permission", the other jinn explained.

"Great Law? Amhadina's Small Law? What do you mean?" Martha asked.

"We jinn are bound to several law codices. One is the Great Law. It's a law codex that applies to all jinn: We are not allowed to kill, we can't bring the dead back. We are not allowed to mess with the free mind and, if we are convicted or if we enter a period of servitude, it is always for a limited time. And some more laws." Sami explained.

"That sounds familiar." Martha said.

"Yes. The rules for jinn slaves are based on the Great Jinn Law. It's also the reason why you are forced to grant only one wish. Your period of servitude to each master is always for a limited time only."

"And what is the Small Jinn Law?" Martha asked.

"These are local laws. While the Great Jinn Law applies to every jinn everywhere, the Small Jinn Law is valid only within the area of the jinn lord, who made this law."

"The Small Law is made by the jinn lords?"

Sami nodded. "Each jinn lord rules over a limited region, usually his or her settlement. And for this settlement, the jinn lord makes additional laws. Of course, the Small Law must not violate the Great Law."

"Of course not." Martha agreed. "So, it's the Small Law that forbids humans to enter jinn settlements?"

"There's not THE Small Law. There are many." Sami corrected Martha. "Maybe there had been Small Laws that allowed humans to enter, I don't know. In the settlement of Amhadina, humans were not allowed unless they got a special permit by Lady Amhadina."

"I see. And I guess they are subjected to the jinn laws as well?"

"Of course they are. And the punishment can be really severe for humans, as I was about to soon witness." Sami said.
