Description Sami sat on his couch and examined the small black object Martha had left behind. He touched the screen and a field of numbers appeared with some text asking him to enter the code. Sami tried to remember. He has seen Martha moving her finger over the field, before. Thanks to the good memory of genies, he finally remembered the path of Martha's finger movements. He retraced the numbers and the smart phone unlocked. Again, Sami faced a cluster of colorful pictures on the screen. It took him some time until he found something called "address book", which contained a list of names. Some of them were familiar to him: Amelia, David, the hotel reception. Suddenly, he had an idea. He selected David's name and waited.

David had just dealt with a problem in the hotel's kitchen and had called a plumber, when he got another call on his phone. The display showed Martha, but when he accepted the call, he heard the voice of Sami: "Hello David, it's Sami. Can you come over and release me from my lamp? Martha left her talking box behind."

"You mean her mobile phone. Sure, I'll come to you and take it to Martha." David replied and hurried to the lobby.

A few minutes later, he rubbed Sami's lamp and the blue genie appeared. "Hello, Sami. Thanks for calling me. Martha is surely missing her mobile. I'll take it her immediately." David stretched his hand towards Sami.

"Actually, I'd like to ask you for another favor." Sami blinked and a pair of golden earrings appeared in his hand.

"Aren't these Martha's earrings?" David asked.

"They are. And there's something you should know about them: I created them from a human girl, who wished that 'I make her a pair of earrings.'"

David jaw dropped down. "You transformed an innocent girl into a pair of earrings? And then you gave her to Martha as a present?" He was furious now. "Does Martha know about this?"

Sami lowered his head. "No. And I need your help to set things right."

David took a deep breath. "What do you have in mind?"

"I thought you could wish the girl back into her human body." Sami proposed.

"Will you tell Martha about it?"

"I will, when I see her next time." Sami promised. "David, I need your help here. I can't undo a wish unless a human uses another wish."

"Geez, you genies. Why are you always granting wishes in such a exacting manner?" David shook his head. "Ok, I have to understand this: You want me to wish that this girl is turned back the way she was before? And you don't intend on creating any kind of replacement from, say me or any other living being?"

"That's right. I just want to turn her back into the human girl she was before." Sami said.

"May I ask why you suddenly changed your mind about transforming one of your victims back?"

Sami waited for a second before answering. "Martha advised me to explore my human heritage. And I thought I could start here."

"Your human heritage?"

"It's a long story. I can tell you later. Let's say for now, I'm doing this for Martha." Sami said.

"Fair enough, Sami, I'll help you. But I'll word this wish carefully. And later, you will confess to Martha." David declared. Sami nodded.

"Alright, here we go." David made his wish. "Sami, I wish that you turn this pair of earrings back into the girl they were originally for all time and without creating any replacement for the earrings."

Sami placed the earrings on the ground. "Your wish is granted." He blinked and the earrings grew in size. They took the shape of a girl of about 16 years old. Sami even added the clothes she had on, originally. Finally, it was done and the earrings were a girl again. But something was wrong. The girl simply stared off into space with a dull look on her face.

David waved his hands in front of her. She didn't react. "What's wrong with her, Sami?" he asked.

"Oh dear, I guess she was a set of earrings for too long. Her mind has already adapted and is most likely gone now." Sami explained.

"You genies are pure evil! That's... that's like killing her." David outraged.

"I didn't kill her. She's still alive. Otherwise, I would have broken the genie law." Sami defended himself.

"That's a hack lawyer's argument. Basically, this girl's mind doesn't exist anymore. So, what shall we do with her now? Will her mind return over time?" David asked.

"I don't know." Sami replied. "I guess she will develop a new mind over time. But I'm not sure."

"Well, I don't want to hand her over to a mental institution. But, what if we give her the chance for a fresh new start, if we turn her into a baby and let her grow up again, would that work?" David proposed.

"Sounds reasonable." Sami replied. "But where will you find a family that will raise her, again?"

"That's not the problem. We could easily find a family to adopt her. Or, even better, we send her back to her original family." David said. "Will you grant me another wish?" Meanwhile, David had the feeling that Sami really repented his decision to turn the girl into a pair of earrings.

"Yes, I will." Sami said.

"Good, then I wish that you turn this girl into a baby again and return her to her original family. She should grow up as their natural daughter again." David stated his wish.

Sami had a relieved look on his face. "Your wish is granted." He blinked and the girl disappeared from sight.

"I hope she is with her family again." David said. "And that you will keep your promise about telling Martha later."

"Don't worry, David. I stick to my word."

Well, I still remember that part of that story. And after more than 2 years since that story was made, Sami decided to change Sheryl back to (half)normal.

True, but there's not much left of Sheryl. And Sami isn't moved too much by that fact, that he erased her from the universe as a person.

If so, it prevents all possibilites wich we speak about in PM in which I was look forward to.

If her victims are death, it is extenuating circumstance for Martha, but it didn´t justify her actions, on top of that, she has no intentions to change them back before, so if it isn´t homicide/ murder, it is manslaughter.
If they are without their minds, there is no reason to change them back, except if she want to send their bodies to their families to ease their pain.
Making with them something like was done to Sherryl isn´t redemption. Making new life instead of taken life is like killing someone and then impregante some women. This will not remove her guilt. So its depend on how you choose to continue with it. She can admit that she lost her humanity even if she can change them back with their original minds, if she will be facing some dramatic consequences of her transformations and their impact on others.
In both ways she could admit that she lost her humanity and she could trying for redemption (for helping her victims if they has their minds, or if they don´t there must be some other case in wich she could fight for something good), or she could take a dark parth, surrender, became Samis lover and killing partner - but then will story need some hero, or antihero who will oppose them.

That's an excellent analysis. I think you will find a lot of these ideas in the endings I've planed.

Maybe he was lying, it wouldn´t be surprise. Roisin is good expample that they can preserve human mind, so maybe he just decided not to preserve their minds (he is sadist bastard, so no suprise again) and thus he violate genies code (messing with mind/ or killing - it must be one of it it he kills human mind. And something bad counted all his victims for a time of settle account. Even the fairy girls transformation magic has some limitation to mind and duration. Which brings me back to magic laws, there shoudl be some as laws of physics). And so maybe Marthas victims has their minds, because while she is inexperienced, she coul preserve their minds unknowingly and it could reduce number of her killings, instead of Sami´s killing spree.

Interesting idea. Still, it's more likely that the mind will adapt to the body, unless the genie places a protection on it. In "Jinn judgement", Martha decided to punish both women by letting Roisin keep her mind, so both women had to sort out their differences first. By accident, she placed a protection on Roisins mind, but didn't realise that.
To keep the mind rule a young genie has to learn to place a protection on the mind of a transformed person. By doing this, the genie wouldn't change the mind of the transformed person at all and the transformed person can be restored later.

Why didn't Sami tell this to Martha? Best case is, that Sami never learned that. Worse case, and more likely is, that Sami abandoned that rule and didn't tell it to Martha, which is even more despicable. In both cases, it counts as leniency for Martha, since she hasn't learned that rule at all.

But that would also mean: Many people Martha has transformed are beyond hope. So how should Martha react? Should she transform her victims back into humans as an act of remorse, even if she can't restore their minds? Or should she keep them that way and accept her guilt, admitting that she has lost her humanity?

No, I don´t blame him of nothing. I was just wonder why he didn´t wait some time to see what will happen, when Sami say that even he don´t know what will happen with her mind when she is back. As I wrote, I am glad that he consider it as a murder and I hope it will make a bigger chasm between them and bring more aversion. On second thought it is understandable that he didn´t show more anger, you don´t want to fight with a genie, especially with a childkiller. I wonder now if Martha could love a childkiller.
If they can´t mess with mind, they shouldn´t be allowed to kill mind, or let it being erased while people are transformed (it is in collision with rule that they can´t kill), because basically it is messing with mind. Or some universal magic law which Sami don´t know about could prevent that something like that happend (you know, like some limits as you can´t wish to be a ruler of a world, or enslave all beings, etc). And bring her memory back isn´t "messing with mind". It is restoring, rescuing, reestablishing what was before, repairing of genies damages.

An interesting aspect is, that genies can keep the mind of a transformed person. Take Roisin for example. Martha turned her into a harp, but she decided to keep her mind intact or partly intact. She can even interact with Saoirse by not allowing her to play on her.
I know that trapping a transformed persons mind in another form is bad too, but it wouldn't be murder, since such a person can always be rescued.
An interesting fact: the person who told Martha that the mind of a transformed person will adapt was Sami. She doesn't know better. What if he didn't tell her the truth?

So Sami killed Sherryl. There will be new person growing in her old body and she is gone, poor girl. Just because she wanted earrings and because Sami is sadist maniac. And Martha didn´t even know about it.
David didn´t even think about waiting if her mind will be back. Or use wish to restore her memory. Strange that he, as a human, didn´t care about her death more. About a death of a child. Firstly he was mad about it, but then he let it go. But at least he consider it as a murder. So I don´t know how you could think that they will became friends.
Genies laws seems similar to laws of catholic church. When they trying to banish abortion, or euthanasia, they care just about body, as genies, not about mind. While mind is what define every person. Like it was shown in some stories with cloning humans, or transfer human mind into artificial body, or with self evolving mind of artificial intelligence. Mind as your "yourself" makes you you, makes you a person.

Since a genie isn't allowed to mess with the mind, it would have been impossible to restore her original mind. David decided to do the best to let her original mind grow back (if that's possible at all). By reuniting Sheryl with her family as a baby, she can grow up with her real parents and hopefully develope a similar mind - it won't be the same but it's very likely that it is similar to the original mind.
You say that David didn't care about her death. He cared a lot since he wished her back with her family. He thought about what would probably restore her mind as best as possible and as best he understood the situation. Or should he have asked Sami about it, after Sami was responsible for Sheryl's death? I don't understand why you blame David here.

It's a nice touch sseing Sami might change his ways eventually.
But I don't think Sami and David will become friends. Still, they can team up as buddies when they have to rescue the girls of my story.
