Well, when Tenma invented Atom, he gave him the best features he could, and did not put the worst.
We don't know Hamegg's story. I hate him too, but he can have his own reasons to be so cruel. The fact he's also stupid, because he could gain more if he threated better his workers.
In 1980 series we don't know much about Atom's program and personality: they skirt the issue about it, unluckily. Maybe at that time this was not important. On the other side, we know exactly how bad Hamegg is.
In this old drawing, though, I was inspired by the old 1963 series, where Tenma is worst than Hamegg himself, as he sold him to the circus; I imagined Atom acting as he was totally impossible to repair, and then returning home.
Here, two possibilities: Tenma keeps the door shut... or he tries to repair his best creation, and gives him a new family.

Tenma can be terrible, and the version of 1963 is the most terrible of all, but when he's put in that situation, he can't be that cruel, can't he? Maybe he will not repair him, maybe he will leave him in a cupboard in his house, before he leaves... we don't know, and Atom does not know it either. But now they're together, with not enough time to go to search for a recharging-machine. They just can stay there, waiting for the time to pass, for the battery to discharge and to say goodbye each other.
If Tenma does not want him anymore, Atom can see him for the last time, and not in a memory in the middle of the Hamegg's show.

Well, sorry to say this but my version in that upcoming story of mine will be most similar to his 1963 version and his Once Upon A Time version....in other words, he'll be cruel.

The most despicable version of Atom's father is the 1980s American comic, if you ask me (the one by "NOW! Comics").
He's not only crazy and cruel, but even sadic, and he blames his son for things HE does!
At last, Atom succeeds in turn him good, but it seems his science will be twisted forever: even Tenma's new upgrades for his son, to help him, are full of dangerous sides.
In this version, we get a deep look in Tenma's insane view of the world, after he lost his beloved wife and son. There's a picture where we see him watching obsessively an old video about his wife and his son at the seaside, in some old holidays.
It's an old projector, the image is on a wall, and he does not want to stop watching it, as the wall could give him back his happy days.
And we see Atom is not his first attempt to recreate his lost son: Atom finds a prototype of himself, but he does not know what this AI robot is. He fixes it, they become friends. But that strange and not-talking half-complete robot boy can't be his friend, and when his father discover what Atom had done...
His schizoid mind is saw clearly: he loves his robot-son as a real son, but at the same time he treats him as an object. His two opposite natures leave him in a devilish state all other Tenma's version can't match.
Here, Atom is forced to fight; as his nature is good and mild, he has to fight because of a blackmail his father and Hamegg put on him. So we see through his eyes: he's fighting against a robot, but he sees his father taking all his powerful hits.
It's creepy, but gives us the real measure of what is happening in our beloved robot's head.

Ok, he is not our hero, expecially in 1951s and in 1963s version.
But I draw him as a mix of the 1980s and 2003s version... so, we can hope.
(In those situations, we say: "You hang your coat on a bad hanger")

You know: Tenma can be a real nightmare, but I can't hate him. He can be neurotic, easy to anger and all his other beautiful features. But I also see a man under an unbearable grief, alone, abandoned, left alone with his thoughts... and you know what he has in his head: the robot-world, the king or robots, changing himself in a machine and 'sweet' things like that. Not mentioning his memories about his lost wife and son.
So, I don't justify his cruel behavior, expecially with Atom, but I can understand him.
I can hope a bit, even in that old version, giving him hints from his next versions.
He made Atom, he put together this beautiful robot putting in him all the love he could, giving his feeling a body and a soul. I can't hate the man who gave the world Atom.

Me too!
...Well I'm not as good at english as you, so I can't write everything I want. But I know exactly what you mean. If you read the 2003 Manga,... I mean look at Tenmas research! How long it took, to create it perfectly, and he didn't listen to the other scientists, even when they said it's impossible to create technical feelings, it's like he wants to create a human. But it worked, because he wanted bring back his son so badly.
(Hope my english isn't too badΒ , I'm from germany)

Your English's not so bad, it's Ok, don't worry
I can't read the 2003s comic here: I just could find some episodes, but not the whole series. I remember Tenma saying to Tobio: "We have in our laboratory a prototype that's as tall as you, but it can lift a building with its bare hands".
It was stunning, you know. Tenma was saying his son that his copy was almost already, and they both could not know it.

I knew the 2003s anime version in English, and it's all bad cut, censored and rewritten, so I really prefer the original Japanese one; I watched the series almost 8 times, in 6 different languages; I miss the comic by Himekawa, because I found just three episodes.

I saw it so often, I can't count anymore. In original Japanese and in english. I hate the cuts, but I think I like the music from the english version better

Hirpina81 In reply to Astro-Boy-2003 [2014-11-08 02:03:06 +0000 UTC]
To tell you the truth, I hate the English music.
The first Japanese opening could be a bit common (seems a music from InuYasha...) but it's 100 times better then that English short and computer-like opening.
The second Japanese opening, instead, is horrible, and in that case I always skip it.
The closing tunes are a bit odd, but cool: old Atom's theme, sang in different ways ^_^
And "A boy's heart" is too sweet!
In the English version Astro is too much a machine: all the hugs with Ochanomizu are cut, everytime he plays with a toy or does childish things, there's a cut; when Princess Kaya of Mejora comes to visit Metro City, the boys try lots of different hats, having lot of fun, but this scene is cut; all the 20th episode is cut; two episodes are swapped, and it is a mess; Tobio's death has been changed in a runaway from home (and if my son runs away, I don't create a copy of him, I search for him with all power the Chief of the Science Ministery has got), a mess so big that someone still asks if Tobio is still alive... if Tobio lives, Atom never comes to life...; they messed up with Daichi/Atlas's story, making us thinking he always had been a robot... but how cruel you are if you prepare all that food for your son's birthday, if he is a robot and he can't eat?; the last episode is the most cut of all, with Tobio-robot almost vanishing in the air; the final phrase, "I forgive you" is a mistake: Tenma thinks he did right, he does not want to be forgiven: he wants to be saved, and the only way is to LOVE him, so Atom does it, calling him Father. Tenma is in the worst desperation I can imagine, so there's one thing that could stop him to kill himself. He needs to hear his son not deny him anymore.
In my memory I often put together the English version with the original Japanese, but sometimes it's impossible: sometimes the story is deeply different, and I have to see Astro and Atom as two different beings.

And I've got the Japanese with odd-English subtitles. It never arrived in Italy.
We know the 2009s movie, the 1980s series and the 1970s series of Jetter Mars.
Now, in 2014, september, they aired another and brand new series, "Astro Boy reboot". I'd like to take a look, but God only knows when someone will share it on you-tube. '_'

I have just one short movie of the many they made after the 2003s series, and M4DgIRL helped me; on you-tube there are only some extract. Those special are 15 minutes long, but they are well made. I had to watch it all in Japanese with Chinese subtitles.
On you-tube there's also a special movie called "The secret of Atom's birth". That's really cool.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=0njGed⦠; <-here it is.
I think this is the same video you posted
We never had the comic series here, so, when the 1980s series arrived, we weren't prepared. It was a bit odd, too dark and sometimes there were comic points that broke the serious atmosphere; there were also lots of quotes, but we could not get them.

Oh there also exist a remake of the 1980's series. It's really cool I saw just 2 episodes of it, but I think it's more well made than the original 1980's series. It's drawn like the 2003 version but Astro, his sister and all the other characters look like in 1982. I've got a link to the japanese trailer.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4jVFDβ¦
First I thought, it would be only a trailer because there is nothing to find about that remake, but then I saw two episodes on tudou.com
In one of them, the blue knight appears in the 1980 style.

So, this means that: no more Tenma from the second episode on, the circus and all the old stories from the comics, old fashioned Atlas, dark atmosphere and robot-family.

Yes! I think the 2003 version is MUCH more cheerful!
Everytime I watch a 1980's episode, I'm sad at the end.
And everytime, I watch the 2003 version, I just want to watch the episode again! But I love the 1980 version. Its full with feelings and emotions. And I love the 1960' cartoon because if you watch an episode of them, you can feel the "Spirit of the Original Astro Boy". It's probably because Tezuka drew that series by himself. - Not only he of course.

Hirpina81 In reply to Astro-Boy-2003 [2014-11-11 01:30:59 +0000 UTC]
The 1980s series had got some problems, but it was good. And was the one thing about Astro Boy, with the movie, arrived in Italy.
As a kid I could not bear all this sadness at the end of every episode. But now I understand more, and I can stand even the worse parts.
Sometimes was a bit too cruel (in Robotland or in Devil's baloon). But it was also deeply realistic.
In this remake I noticed some new features: Blue Knight was absent in the 1980s series, and Atlas was the revenge knight.
I would really like to see Tenma again: that version was the most innocent among all his ones. He was angry, but he never abandoned his son.
When he calls Atom, and his son can't answer, because he's too tired after the battle with Atlas's first form and Hamegg cheated and kidnapped him, I always imagine Tenma spending all his life searching for his son.
Maybe in this remake they thought about a fate for that version of Tenma. Maybe is more like the version of the original comic, and he will pop up to help or to stop Atom.
Let's hope so

Yes let's hope so!
But something is weird about the 1980's series. I mean Why should a 9 year old boy fall in love with a girl, so badly that he's going to replace his legs and put hers on?!
π: 0 β©: 1
Hirpina81 In reply to Astro-Boy-2003 [2014-11-12 17:15:30 +0000 UTC]
He's also a robot. So if she won't be rebuilt again, the only way to stick together is to... wear a part of her. Her legs. The ones of the few parts remained of her, after that mess.
That stupid scientist could make 100 copies of her and put bombs in each of them, but he could not repair Ryoka without that blasted blueprint!
Stupid scientist! Stupid stupid stupid!
The 1980s series was almost all weird: when you hear the Tetsuwan Atom tune starting, you know that Atom is going to be hit hardly; that music was made to introduce him as a winning hero, not a poor boy under a bully's torture!
There are also some comic parts put awkwardly here and there in the episode; authors thought that it could made more light that dark atmosphere, but those funny moments break the nerves as sad moments do.
There are some questions about Atlas, his creator, Tenma and his fate, monsters and parents etc, that the cartoon will never explain.
If they made a remake, I hope they put all the missing answer in the new episodes.
I wish I could see them

The worst version I saw was the French one, with Tenma... called Balthus... asking Tobio to say hello. "Father!" If I lost my son, I want my new son saying me "Father!" (Or mother, in my case), not hello!
And what about the Canadian version? They added a sorta of quiz: Atom reports his last adventure to Ochanomizu and a computer registers his words. The narrator then asks the public to say where Atom voluntarily missed or changed a thing in his report.
As he had a walk in a park, not a life-at-stake cruel fight with a robot or a monster.

Canadian version wanted to be a sorta of educational. It was a show for kids, wasn't it? So it HAD to be an educational. -_-
Now, the new Frech version of anime are the best: they don't cut and don't censore anymore. But back then they made the same we made: lots of cuts, rearranged stories, awkward episode sequence, things happening and you don't know why, because a piece is missing...
I watched the Italian version of Jetter Mars, and I think it's all messed up...^_^'
But Astro Boy (1980s) was not cut: Atlas was there from the first episodes.

There's always the same article, that speaks about the episode number, the target, the fatc it will be half in drawings and half in computer graphics, and there will be a mini-series for kids. It will be a co-production between Japan and I don't remember which Country in Europe.
