Part One: 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁- 𝟲𝟲𝟲 + 1 Bone  for Andromeda

“𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩.”

The words played on repeat in Andromeda’s head, recalling the foundational teachings of Hintertomb. She needed to focus on her future, and there was no one who was going to drag her out of bed to do so. Not anymore, at least.

It was unique, in the deep summer, to have one’s mittens a few inches deep in frozen perspiration. Alas, The mountaintops were snow-capped, so it was to be expected… here. Still, something to get used to for Andromeda, anyway. She carried herself with a graceful silence, following the hidden scent trails of larger wildlife. Perhaps if they were disappearing somewhere, it was worth checking out. For the pack’s sake, and to settle Andi’s anxious worries. One trait of hers that made her a good fit for Iris– she’s persnickety. Typically seen as a negative trait, at least here it was applicable for being useful.

For about an hour now, Andromeda had been on the trail of a small mountain goat herd. Not that she was cut out to take any down– at least, not right now– but she was curious where they would disappear to after grazing in the hills each late afternoon… something she’d observed not long ago. Perhaps this discovery may be one to aid her fellow Wolkin, Voxes in particular.

With her nares twitching rapidly, the dame trotted along with silent paw steps, eyes careful and observant as they traced every detail of the environment around her. As she went, she reminded herself to be watchful for three things: threats, obstacles, and her path ahead. This was what Sahir had always told her, though it was new to Andromeda to be doing this alone. Regardless, she wasn’t going to let her brother’s absence–and the cold spot it left on her right shoulder–hinder her work. Huffing, Andromeda wiped her psyche of the negative thoughts and once again focused on her surroundings.

Colder and colder, her paw pads got as she climbed. Many times she had to stop and assess the safety of the cliffs ahead, noting how much of a hassle it may be for the average Wolkin to scale– an important thing to consider when scouting for useful areas. Andi persisted with ease however, leaping from one cliff to the next and still managing to stay quiet as she did so, as not to alert the hoofed and horned subjects leading the way.

Andromeda was doing her best to keep her endurance up, taking small rests here and there, as not to risk breathing too loudly. Which, was a task in itself. Soon, the goats in front of her took to a more treacherous route, scaling the almost vertical side of the cliffs without hesitation. As much as that both impressed and annoyed the young Iris, it didn’t matter that it wouldn’t be long before the goats would disappear into the fog. It didn’t matter because something else had caught Andromeda’s sage-hued eyes. Instead of taking the rockier path, Andromeda turned, standing adjacent to a cluster of evergreens for a second or two as she eyed what appeared to be a deep cavern. Hidden just behind a narrow pass, unmarked and undiscovered. Tilting her head curiously, Andromeda began to pad forward to investigate.

This part, though exciting, was also rather nerve-wracking for the lass. She was alone. Who was to tell who could hear her if she’d screamed, or howled for help? It was dark, and the only thing illuminating her passage was the blue-tinted moonlight as it bathed the mountainside on a clear evening. At least it’s not snowing, Andromeda thought. Glancing up for a moment, Andi was quick to move from beside the cluster of trees and into the shadows of the narrow pass, now headed the opposite way from her mountain goat friends. She wouldn’t forget to tell the omen that’s where they disappeared to, however. She figured it was information the Voxes may need. Taking a deep breath, Andromeda disappeared into the depths of the darkness, uncertain what come next.
