FAQs:

1. What kind of paper does this use?

90lbs/185g
Letter or A4 size. Scale to printable area (don't try to print them at original image size, because they won't match).

2. Where is the previous V3 package?

Superseded by the V3A31 package, which improves on it in every way. Together with the accessories package, it include a large number of previous and updated parts.

3. What do the version numbers mean?

V1 & V2: Old versions, both handmade. The receivers, barrels, and magazines are unique and incompatible with anything else. Some accessories like sights can be interchanged with other versions. Handguards are also cross-compatible, because versions 1 through 3 use barrels with the same thick diameter. However, the design quality of versions 1 and 2 is very poor, so I don't recommend building them.

V3A2: Handmade V3 lower receiver that only accepts V2 (undersized) magazines.

V3: Current version, digitalized and generally better build quality, although with some notable weaknesses, such as the barrel and stock. If a receiver is labeled V3A3, that means it takes V3 magazines. However, there are some slight differences in V3 magazines, so some may fit better than others. V3 magwell has a retaining bar at the back that holds the magazine in place.

V3A416: Hk416 that uses V3 receiver measurements and magazine system. As the two-tone build shows, the receivers are cross-compatible. The main difference is the way the stock attaches (rear ring, buffer tube, and stock) and the way the barrel attaches (it goes into the upper receiver). The upper receiver also fits together better, but, being an Hk416 upper, it is taller only matches the Hk416 handguard. Overall, this is a much stronger model, but retains the unrealistic V3 magazine system.

V3A31: Same magwell and receiver dimensions, but improved buffer tube and barrel, and more realistic minor details. In short, it's an application of the lessons learned from the V3A416 model back to the standard M4 carbine configuration.

V4: Hypothetical next version, with realistic proportions and mag release. Although some of the current parts can be considered "V4" parts, I have barely started actually making a V4 receiver. The stock and barrel will attach similarly to the V3A416. There is no estimated release date.

AKM V1 is the easiest by far. But to be fair, it does have a couple of difficult parts, such as the dust cover.

The V2 and SCAR are more complex, or at least have higher parts counts and require more careful work.

The AR, being modular, can be built at a slow pace. It doesn't have too many internals, so it's actually pretty straightforward. However, this V3 has some parts I don't really like, so I'm in the process of improving it.

I'd recommend around 190 gsm. Watercolor paper is common in this thickness, but make sure it's not too bumpy.

Which parts are getting caught? Is it too wide, or too long?

The simplest reasons are that it might have been printed with different settings, the paper might be thicker than recommended, and/or the glue might be too thick.
(I once had an issue where selecting a printer would inadvertently resize the image and make it come out too small, but subsequent images would come out just fine, so I had to select the printer, close the print window, the open it again to get the first one correct.) But if everything else fits together correctly and you haven't noticed any other discrepancies, there's probably something else that's the matter.

If it's actually a problem with the design, please let me know the details. It fit just fine on my test build, but more data is always welcome.

By the way, before you print the upper receiver, please make sure you have this page , because there used to be a mistake on it.

In the M4 handguard I'm geting trouble to find the correct position from the parts. The stock is the same problem, but less.Β
Thanks for replying!

Sorry for the delay, but here is the guide for the M4 handguard.

I don't have recent photos of the stock, but I will describe it. The first page is pretty simple, because there's an illustration on the page. Attach the resulting buffer tube to the lower receiver. Pay attention to it to make sure it's straight, and, after it dries, put some more glue on it to make sure it stays on, because it's really not attached very firmly.

Next, go to Pg.3 and build the Bottom Frame. Then build the "Center" on Pg.4 and add it to the Bottom Frame.

The Outer Tube, on Pg.2, does not close in on itself like a normal tube. Instead, attach each side of it to the Bottom Frame. Then, slightly curve the "Color Backdrops for Holes" and place them inside the tube, in part to reinforce it, and in part to add a darker layer visible through the holes.

Then, make the Buttplate, which is just a cylindrical box, and stick the Rearmost Plate on the back, just to thicken it.

Finally, on Pg.2 you will find the Latch and on Pg.3 you will find the Latch Rod. Refer to the picture "latch assembly" for a hint on how the latch fits together. Then the latch rod simply goes through it vertically.

You should be left with 3 separate pieces: the buffer tube on the gun, the stock proper, and the latch. Push the stock onto the buffer tube, and use the latch to lock it in place. It's true that it's not a realistic "latch," and is more like a pin, but that's the simplistic state of the model. I'd advise keeping it on a closed position, or better yet, just build the CTR stock instead, which is much better.

It should be fine.
Just make sure you score the fold lines before folding them. It's especially necessary with heavier paper like this.

(Sorry for my English, i know it's a shit, btw greetings from Brazil).

And other thing:

If i use "A4" Scale does the finished AR15 will be in a cool scale or it'll be like a "mini ar15"?

Hoborginc In reply to Ramtzer [2014-07-29 01:21:09 +0000 UTC]

250 is too thick. You'll have a hard time bending it, and some parts might not fit together correctly because they'll be too fat.

The pages are proportioned in such a way that they'll turn out correctly on both A4 and letter.
Just make sure you print all the pages the same way, and you don't let the image expand beyond the page (let it get naturally resized to the printable area, which is the way it's supposed to be.)

How must I assemble the rear ring in V3A416 Lower?Β I'm having a little trouble...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hoborginc In reply to MateusLuiz [2014-07-12 04:42:18 +0000 UTC]

1. Attach the rear ring (the basic part) to the lower.
2. Attach the rear ring corners over the places where it attaches to the lower, taking care not to block the takedown pin holes any more than necessary.
3. Insert the interior and attach the exterior faces.

Hoborginc In reply to darkshooter23 [2014-07-01 23:09:16 +0000 UTC]

They work for both. Despite the dimensions of the files, when printed, they are scaled down the same way by the width of A4 or the length of Letter.

These guns are an impressive feat of engineering! Assuming thick enough paper, how durable are they as a prop to hold?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hoborginc In reply to Avrin-ART [2014-06-29 19:43:14 +0000 UTC]

The AR is pretty fragile, because the stock and barrel are not attached very firmly.

The sturdiest one is the AKM V2, which makes a pretty durable prop.

The SCAR's receiver is also very durable, but the folding stock mechanism may be a liability.

either way thnx for making these they are awesome! I wish I was better at this kind of stud so I could make more of these and not have them by super crappy! Lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Hoborginc In reply to CaptainF0rk [2014-06-14 18:51:12 +0000 UTC]

While they are simpler, the previous versions are also structurally weaker, visually sloppier (that is to say, handmade), and less realistic in details and proportions. In short, they're shit. But if you're interested, here are the files for the V1 and V2.

Magazines, uppers, and lowers only fit others of the same version. Other accessories are cross-compatible. I can't guarantee how well the colors or textures work or how they match each other. Essentially, please view these as a work in progress rather than complete models.

Really, the only parts from these versions that are worth building are the suppressor, the M4 handguard, the Aimpoint, and some of the sights that haven't been digitized yet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hoborginc In reply to TankerChu [2014-06-14 18:36:06 +0000 UTC]

The trick to cylinders is to gently curve the paper before actually closing it all the way. Rub it against the corner of the table so it will gradually assume a rounded shape. This avoids the creases that would otherwise appear when making a cylinder. However, it depends on the type of paper, and if you want a cylinder to be very smooth, you'll have to pick lighter paper and sacrifice some structural rigidity. I typically don't want to go any lighter than 185g so I do get some pretty ugly cylinders sometimes.

Hoborginc In reply to TankerChu [2014-08-02 00:24:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you just glue it on. There's no attachment mechanism. Even the parts that fit the rails should still be glued on.

Hoborginc In reply to darkshooter23 [2014-06-07 18:12:40 +0000 UTC]

It's the normal, default size to which the printer automatically scales it. Just don't touch anything and it'll be right.

(The size associated with the files is actually larger-than-normal. Don't try to keep it that large, or else it'll go beyond the edges of the paper. Just let the printer scale it to the printable area and it'll come out the way it's supposed to.)

All the attachments are supposed to be glued, especially ones that don't actually grab hold of the rails.
But if you'd rather avoid attaching it permanently, I suppose it's possible to attach it with rolls of tape.
