it was because she, along with all the other uchihas, was planning to attack konoha and Itachi was ordered to kill them all. The only reason he didn't kill Sasuke was because he actually loved him like a true brother. He didn't tell sasuke this so that sasuke wouldn't stay weak. He wanted sasuke to become stronger so that he would live on to become a great shinobi.
sorry for the long discussion. There is more, I just don't care enough to post it all. Just read the manga or watch the anime.

No worries, I've gotten that far in the anime, but not much farther past Sasuke allyng with Akatsuki and Madara, so thanks for not telling me anymore.
I couldn't tell if Sasuke's mom was in on the plot or was just being a dutiful mom and wife, i.e. if she was a non-combatant/retired ninja and wasn't gonna be part of the actual cue.
