My paintings usually turned out like the 3rd image, kind of frustrating because I don't know how to go on from there. Now this... I understand. It's a lot of help! Will be looking at this for my future work, thanks!

You're probably experiencing the same problem I have a lot-- we have the basics for a great picture, but we don't go far enough into finishing and detailing. Another thing I've learned is that zoom takes care of a lot of problems. If you are able to zoom into a lot of finished paintings, they will look a bit sloppy, but when you zoom out, everything looks great. So after you've got the basic colors of your image blended, zoom in and blend them again. It really helps.
