Description

"Berek" is a type of wetland in Hungary, especially on the Western parts. It is not exactly a grove, not exactly a marsh, but a place where the meadow is covered by an inch of water or a bit less. Some areas are changing seemlessly into a marsh or even into a secluded system of reeds and ponds and alike, giving home of vast number of waterfowl and wildlife. Berek is a complete ecosystem, rich but fragile.

We visited a photographer friend in Zala county (still in Hungary), near Nagykanizsa and took a blue hour stroll in the berek behind his yard to shoot some game. It was quite cold in the October night but otherwise it was serene and calm, and beautiful mists evaporated as the light broke, creating a magical scene in the already magical berek. The dimmed color palette of the morning blue hour was tampered with the rich hues of the wetland and perhaps some rain.
