Wind ripped across the hills with fury, whipping snow and hapless debris around wildly. Blythe pushed onwards, undeterred, his strong legs unyielding from the onslaught of the harsh blizzard. His silver mane waved like a banner behind him, some of the locks occasionally lashing him in the face and causing him to flinch.

The stallion stopped and looked around, eyes squinted against the sting of the wind, trying to gather his bearings - but he could just barely make out the foggy form of trees in the distance. Blythe sighed and did a quick check of the air around him, trying to see if he could smell anything new. He’d hate to be stalked by a predator hiding in the fog without his knowledge.

At first, all the stallion could smell was old animal scents - deer, foxes, the like. Then, the scent of horses wafted up to his flared nose, and it was fresh. The stallion flicked his ears back just slightly, trying to decide if he should investigate…

Why the hell not? He thought to himself, starting in the direction the scent led him. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen another of my kind.

The scent of the strangers lead Blythe to the top of a tall rise, on which he could make out the forms of around six horses - a herd. Blythe exhaled and watched from a distance, almost longingly as the herd huddled together, keeping warm in the cold winter. Blythe longed for the company and warmth of his own herd, it was getting painfully lonely by himself…

Suddenly, a small, abrupt sound caught his attention. A tiny sneeze. Blythe’s ears perked, and he turned his head to his left and fixed his eyes on a patch of thick foliage in front of a treeline. The bush rustled, and Blythe flinched slightly, another tiny sneeze following. It sounded like a horse.

Curious, Blythe inched forward, craning his neck to look over the bush and view the tiny, frail figure hiding behind it. A filly with a wild curly mane was shivering behind the bush, her head tilting upwards when the shadow of the stallion cast over her. She gasped when she realized she’d been found, and doubled back so quickly that she stumbled and fell on her rump. She shivered violently, probably more from fear than the cold as Blythe frowned at her, his ears pinning back with uncertainty.

“P-Please don’t hurt me…” She squeaked out, her voice barely a whimper.

“Why would I do that?” Blythe questioned, pushing through the foliage to join her in the shelter of the trees. “And why were you hiding?”

The filly looked down at her tiny hooves sadly. “I… I lost my mom… She told me that strange horses might be dangerous, so I hid to wait for that herd to leave…” She peered up at Blythe with innocent, meek eyes. “Are you going to hurt me?”

“No.” Blythe responded quickly, immediately dismissing the notion. He craned his neck and looked around, almost expecting to see a mare nearby. “Where did you last see your mother, girl?”

“By the riverbed. A screaming animal started chasing us, and momma told me to run and not look back…” She explained, her lip starting to quiver. “I ran to the forest to wait for her, but she never caught up…”

Blythe frowned. A cougar. He sighed, downcasting his eyes in sorrow. “I don’t think she’s coming back, girl…” The stallion said grimly, not wanting to give her any false hope. There was a very slim chance the filly would find her dam again, as hard as it was to admit.

The filly’s lip continued to quiver, and she hung her head, tears beginning to leak from her closed eyes. Blythe heard a small whimper from the girl, then she broke into quiet sobs. She stood, and moved over to press her forehead against Blythe’s chest, seeking his comfort as she cried. Blythe frowned grimly and quietly allowed the orphan to cry against him. A few minutes passed, and finally the filly was reduced to sniffles and soft hiccups.

“Hey…” He said gently , his voice low and comforting. “I think you should stick with me, girl. It’s not safe for a foal of your age to be alone.”

The filly nodded solemnly and pulled away, sniffing. “O-Okay…”

“My name is Blythe.” The stallion introduced himself, gingerly nudging the filly’s side to direct her through the forest. “What’s your name?”

“K-Kyra.” The filly said, smiling up at Blythe weakly, beginning to walk in the direction the stallion nudged her in. Blythe smiled back slightly, the two making their way through the forest.
