"Red" by Gerald Brom

This is a piece I started this past summer, first in PhotoShop CS3, then after Hurricane Irene blew through I lost CS3. I thankfully had three backup copies of PS7 on-hand, so once I could install it on my laptop, I start working on it again, then I got CS4 Master Collection. I worked on it more, then CS4 got screwed up, then I worked on it in PS7 yet again, then I managed to get CS4 back (thanks, =Candy2021 ) and I was FINALLY able to finished the damned thing. I'm happy it's done, but I'm tired of working on it. I might still go back and touch it up a bit more, but maybe later.

But anyway, some of my older watchers may or may not remember Operation Bob, who was going to be Dr. Ryan's sidekick in RPs, but things changed and Bob was sort of forgotten aside form the occasional mention that he was cryogenic-ally frozen in Tartarus along with many other prisoners, some mentioned by name, some not.

But times have changed. Bob has not only gotten a makeover (I love his new lobotomy scar) and somehow managed to escape an eternity of frozen sleep, but he is currently on the loose in *screamin-jazzy 's City, feeding on anyone and anything unlucky enough to cross his path.

Alexi Jiang is dedicated to stopping him. Good luck with that.

Extra Information

Bob never had a normal childhood. His mother, a scientist, begin taking high doses of Felanerol when Bob was still in-utero, and continued to do so after his birth. She wanted the perfect child, but in taking so much Felanerol along with her obsession with both Bob as well as Bob's biological father (whom she never saw again after Bob's conception), she lost her own sanity in the process and thus "Bob" was taken away from her....

...Bob would then be handed from research facility to research facility for years afterward. He would be subjected in many heinous experiments, which the side effects would mutate Bob's physiology as well as cause him to lose his own sanity. Like mother, like son as it were.

Given his half demon heritage, Bob was able to adapt more easily to various viruses and parasites he was administered, unlike other more human test subjects.

He may be slow moving, and he may move in a sort of shuffling, zombie-like gait, and he may be heavily shackled, but assuming this is a weakness is a mistake. It's best to keep a distance with Bob, due to his scream and his pets...

Bob can also occasionally break into a run, charging at opponents and catching them off-guard.

He controls hordes of rats, bats, snakes, roaches and other vermin, which he refers to as his "pets" and says that they "require sustenance." These pets share a symbiotic bond with their master, and Bob "feeds" through them, so he is never required to actually eat on his own.

One should listen for deep, asthmatic breathing when they believe Bob might be in the area.

I cracked up in the "creepy Crawler stickers" remark. I was trying to get them to blend in, but they refused.
I also KNEW that I forgot something. I forgot to add red glowy to his hair for his eye as well as my usual hair shiny smudgy trick. I'm going to have to fix that. Also, his hair probably looks grainy because I added an `adonihs style grain filter along with film grain texture to the entire piece. I was also having trouble with his hair shading, but then again I have trouble with white hair and red hair shading in general.
You;re also right about his outfit. He need more stains,I also messed up on the folds of his leg bits, not to mention one leg wound up shorter than the other which I had to fix manually in PS.
Nah, he doesn't use the bathroom since the pets go for him.
And his face is stapled together like his lobotomy scar.
I do think I am going to at least try to tweak his hair, add some glowys and more texture to his outfit. Thanks for the input.

anouther reason why a coloured light might help since then you could have had the critters be black with just highlights of fur, scale, carapace and wing ... but it's a tricky effect to get right.
no it's more the lots of grey lines I see allot of people use that style when colouring in manga and I just don't feel it works O.o; or at least it's difficult to make it look natural.
meh noone usually notices too short legs you can just pretend it's foreshortening XD
it's just his nose and lips look like facial piercings from here ^.^;;
but then in the thumbnail he also looked like he was wearing kinky thigh boots XD

HotaruThodt In reply to IvoryFool [2012-01-08 09:52:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting those spikes in his face were kind if nailed in there, but nah, its a combination of spikes, twisted metal, staples, and one safety pin in his ear to make him look pretty.
It might also depend on the monitor for how the critters stand out. It looks pretty dark to me and they don't look quite like ColourForms (that comment still makes me giggle), but I could try darkening them in a bit more and mess with some purpleish highlights.
I could have tried saying it was foreshortening, but I kept noticing it too much to just let that slide.
I just looked at the thumb again. It DOES look like he's wearing thigh boots. Nothing unusual for my character designs though.

I like that it took me a second to notice some of the more subtle stuff, like the creepies in the background Awesome design as usual too. Incidently, I just started to read the new Hellraiser comic series

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to deaddoll00 [2012-01-11 13:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this pieces looks a lot more dark and better blanded on the school monitor I'm currently staring at, but at home the creepies look like they were slapped on like stickers (as Jazz put it), so thanks.

I plan to post the two imaged side by side so one can see how Bob's design has progress from the one time he was drawn in 2005 and now.

How's the new Hellraiser comic. I only read the preview but I liked what I read so far, although I always will like the old series first (stories such as "With My Lips) cannot be undone.

HotaruThodt In reply to deaddoll00 [2012-01-11 22:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Well I think I have all the old 90s comics, the specials (summer/Xmass/spring break), the Pinhead miniseries, the poster book, the Books of the Damned, and Pinhead/Marshall Law, the soundtracks to the first six movies, Coil's original score, HR + Nightbreed, The HHell On Earth Adaption, and probably some other things I've forgotten to mention. SO I'm not sure. >.>;

Have any of the graphic novel adaptations of his books? I have Thief of Always, Great and Secret Show, The Books of Blood. There's also the full Nightbreed Stand-alone series (do you just have the 'Jihad' crossover or the full series?) and some of his older...eh...less awesome superhero comics xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to deaddoll00 [2012-01-12 01:31:23 +0000 UTC]

I just had the Jihad crossover. At the time I had low harddrive space so I was downloading wisely. I didn't even know about those graphic novel adaptions and Thief of Always is my favourite Barker book (as well as my first).

LadyMadCat [2012-01-07 16:58:48 +0000 UTC]

*brrrr* I wouldn't want to meet him face to face, that's for sure He looks more twisted evil than scary to me, like someone who'd spend a lot of time torturing you rather than finishing you off quickly! His clothes are very unique and the color scheme as well, I would've never thought of matching pale blue-ish purple with grey-brown.
Nice little hidden message up there, too I almost missed it. And, do I see an eye peeking through the window on the left, right in the middle of the letter "C" in your watermark?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to LadyMadCat [2012-01-08 04:49:25 +0000 UTC]

It's best to run like Hell if you're lucky enough to see Bob shuffling towards you from a mile away. If he doesn't get you, his pets will. He may not torture in the traditional sense, persay, but considering his pets eat their victims alive it's a pretty gruesome way to die.
Oh, well the message wasn't intentionally hidden. I just made it subtle so that it wouldn't take away from the image: It comes from the movie "Prince of Darkness" particularly this scene: [link] which stood out to me when I first saw the movie. I found it fitting since Bob had an army of vermin who eat whatever he tells them too.
I didn't notice that! No, it's not an eyeball, it's just shattered glass and part of a bat, but that's funny. It's still not at funny as the "Smoke Kitty" that appeared in my old "Don't Say A Word" piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyMadCat In reply to HotaruThodt [2012-01-08 18:53:53 +0000 UTC]

I often thought of adding such "almost hidden" messages to some of my arts but in the end I never implemented them. Maybe one day..... I think it's a cool idea.
Yikes! Flesh-eating scarabs?! I bet that's a scarier horror movie than all those senseless slashers.

LMAO, I looked up that picture of yours and there's indeed a smoke kitty If Smoke had a pet, it'd look like that one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to LadyMadCat [2012-01-09 13:28:56 +0000 UTC]

Hidden messages are fun really. I didn't want the text to take away from the image, but I REALLY wanted the message in there.
Yeah, back in the 70s and 80s, horror was about horror, not the senseless violence and gore that it is now, and therefore they were pretty scary back in the day. That scene I linked you to, was one of two scenes from that movie that stood out to me when I was a kid, the other involving a deformed chick sticking her hands through a mirror (the mirror being another dimension) and hissing "Father...come to freedom..."

Yes! Smoke should have a pet Smoke Kitty! I kind of wanna redo "Don't Say A Word", but I'm not sure if I can replicate the Smoke Kitty again since it was a happy accident before.

LadyMadCat In reply to HotaruThodt [2012-01-09 20:51:04 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I would've dared to watch such a thing when I was a kid, LOL. And, if it involves ghosts, I don't think I'd watch it now, neither Slasher movies OTOH, where screaming youngsters try to run away and stumble and then get brutally massacred by some masked idiot with ridiculous strength and invulnerability, bore me to tears....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to LadyMadCat [2012-01-10 13:08:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it makes you feel any better, my mom was notorious for watching monster movie while pregnant as well as taking me down the horror movie aisle at the local video store when I was a kid. I'm sure both of those played a big part in my love for old school horror movies.
I'm not too fond of slasher films like that myself. Freddie's not so bad, but that's mostly because he attacks people in their dreams.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyMadCat In reply to HotaruThodt [2012-01-10 17:10:12 +0000 UTC]

LOL, they definitely do
I don't like Freddy and I absolutely abhor Jason. I saw some of those Scream and I know what you did last summer...... movies years ago but I wouldn't say I liked them. I only like the Saw series (yay for mindfuck)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HotaruThodt In reply to LadyMadCat [2012-01-10 17:56:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I love my horrors. Hellraiser, The Howling, Evil Dead, Re-Animator, Phantasm...
Freddy's a bit chatty for me, but at least he was original with the dream attacks, although I wish DLC Freddy in MK2011 had been rendered in Robert Englund's likeness.
lolz. I was watching one of Sektor's new Fatalities and people kept saying "SAWALITY!" in the Youtube comments.

Bob huh. Hmmmm..... Well that name maybe a simple name, but when it's use for a person who became a zombie/Weapon X style project, then that name becomes scary. shocked:

Anyway, Bob looks really cool Ms. Thodt. I'm always a fan of monsters with huge claws/finger nails. Great work once more.

Also, if your a huge fan of the Evil Dead movies, you might want to have a look..... At this nasty spit to the movies!! [link]

And giving him a simply name such as Bob (short for Robert of course), is the irony of it all. Thanks.

I am a huge fan of the Evil Dead series. On one hand I'm like all the other fans and pissed off that they would attempt such a thing, but at the same time I feel that Raimi and Campbell know what they're doing. I mean they haven't done any real wrong before and who knows, they might surprise us.
