Here it is, finally finished. I had a lot of fun with this piece. Kind of want to keep working on it, but it's time to let it be done.

Entirely painted from imagination; no references used. There were a few points throughout the painting process where I wanted to look up reference for the water, but I decided to stick it out and paint it myself. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out.

This was a commissioned piece for a private client. Batgirl copyright DC comics.

Here is an up-close detail shot: [link]

I post a lot of sketches and doodles on there that I don't post here.

well im not a pro. and im a new fan of yours . but if the rain is going to right, the flying hair should goes right. it is just my opinion. or is she jumping upside down or something? (because her city building background looks upside down) i love the detail very much <3

Really cool man, really love the rain effect and the reflections. The up-side-down composition is killer, too.

thanks! I had a lot of fun painting the water, despite how long it took me (it was my first time trying to paint it), and believe it or not, the upside-down city idea didn't even come to me until about halfway through the painting. Glad you like it!

I wasn't sticking to the lore, just having fun painting. I chose this costume because i found it a bit more interesting than the black with the yellow symbol.

But I'm confused, is this Babs or Steph? I see Stephanie's costume and the hair could go either way as blonde or red...but it says Oracle which is the name Babs took when she was in a wheelchair?

um, still befuddled?

You're not going to say which it is?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HoustonSharp In reply to LovelyRavager [2012-07-07 19:05:15 +0000 UTC]

I didn't make a choice which one it is. I painted the best looking costume (in my opinion) and titled the piece "Oracle" because it sounds more interesting and mysterious than "Bat girl". That just wouldn't have sounded as cool. So interpret it as you want.

I'm so jealous. Its so cool. How long have you been digital painting? I'm having trouble making my art look realistic. Care to give some tips?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HoustonSharp In reply to DavidWilson93 [2012-03-13 18:00:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've been painting digitally for a few years now. If you're having trouble making your art look realistic, don't think it has something to do with your digital software or digital techniques; It has to do with your traditional art practices. The main thing is to study. Study how light interacts with certain materials, textures, and forms. Study how people use body language. Just observe everything and do your best to comprehend what is being seen, and why. Keep studying and practicing (do a bunch of life drawings of people, and still lifes of objects, etc.) and you'll get there in no time. Just don't put what you gain from studying to waste; make it in your best effort to improve with every piece you create.
