Description Here is the Self-Portrait i have been showing bits and pieces of recently. I can't think of what else to do with it, So I will call it done. Any critiques and comments are appreciated.

All is hand-painted. I tried to keep it rather loose for the background and clothes. I also tried to use Rembrandt's 'windmill' technique, and I think it turned out rather well.

A photo of my face was used as reference, but the hair, lighting, clothes, and beard are from imagination. (I do have a beard, but i didnt have one in the photo reference i used. haha)

Here are some high-res detail shots of this painting: [link]

Thanks for looking!

Love the over-all lighting and the depth/detail of your eye! I think just a few more small hits of bright light on your collar, lips, and hair would really tie it all together and bring it to life like the way you have done your eye Beautiful!

Love the way you handled the hair. No more or less attention than it deserved. As hard as it is to offer any critique of a face your not familiar with, the right eye (on the viewers left) seems like it's a little close to the nose, based on the placement of the other eye, and the width of the turning side.

Beatiful artwork! How do you achieve such a nice skin texture? Thumbs up!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HoustonSharp In reply to D-robin [2011-12-19 19:00:12 +0000 UTC]

thanks! just study how light affects skin texture, then just use a few different custom brushes to speed up the process and get the effect. Theres actually a few different things I do, but that's the main thing.

Dude. how is it possible that your textures keep improving?
Like how the light passes though the shirt slightly! very realistic...

ZOMG SUCH GREAT LIGHTING!

lol you even have neck hairs on there! The hair and the beard look spectacular even if you did use a reference. I like how you faded out the edges. But hmm it might be the lighting, but the left eye looks like it's a lil cross-eyed. All in all your rendering is insane.

HoustonSharp In reply to jessicasalehi [2011-12-13 04:14:18 +0000 UTC]

hahaha, thanks! and damnit, I always wind up making people i paint cross-eyed.

....wait. maybe im just cross-eyed. O_O

Looks amazing man! The only thing I think would make this even better is if you made the shadows on the shirt a little more harder unless the shirt itself is like a soft polo. But changed or not, looks amazing dude, love the detail.

Graphix-Goddess [2011-12-12 21:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Geeze, You do have a very good grasp of lighting, don't you? And, that's awesome that you were able to paint the facial hair without the direct photo reference... but then, hair is fun, right? Lol.

Sometimes when you can't think of anything else to do with an image, you just have to call "done" and let it go ... or simmer a while incase something strikes. It looks good though overall and I can't think of anything to suggest to improve it. Nice work, GT

HoustonSharp In reply to Graphix-Goddess [2011-12-12 21:53:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And yeah, you are right. I always feel bad just calling an image done if I cant think of anything else to do with it; I always tend to think of something else to do with it a few weeks later. haha

Graphix-Goddess In reply to HoustonSharp [2011-12-12 21:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, me too..... I've gone back weeks/months later and edited... Sometimes I scrap and start over even.. hah. I think it's good for now, though - maybe you can play with different lighting colors, etc, later on or something.

lhug-lor [2011-12-12 21:48:00 +0000 UTC]

wow this looks great its almost like a photo how did you get that texture for your skin, shirt and background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HoustonSharp In reply to lhug-lor [2011-12-12 21:56:13 +0000 UTC]

The background was just a combination of a chalk brush and soft round brush, and then blended together messily. The shirt was done in a similar way, but without too much of a soft round brush, and blended more neatly. The skin started off with just a hard round brush, but then at the end I use a few custom brushes I got from Dan LuVisi, Reid Southen, and Gia Nguyen Hoang.
