So I'm toying around with Plume's backstory a bit and I think that I'm completely satisfied now with what her origin is! Here we go!

History:
So basically, Plume is a fusion experiment! And she may look like a whole ordinary gem, but that's because she's only made up of two halves, and they aren't all that broken down, most of the shards from both sides are there, but they were just reconstructed differently. So for example, let's say that you got your arm amputated (this analogy is totally not inspired by anything at all *winks at Droid*) and the put it back on upside-down. Or something.

So her halves, Howlite and Snowflake Obsidian, were a high-up war boss lady and a soldier, respectively. They were both regarded as no longer useful on their own and were thrown into this mess of fusion. But she fell apart frequently due to both of her halve's independence, so they bandaged her up to keep her fused.

Unlike the other mutants, however, Plume felt relatively whole. Howl and Snow complimented each other somewhat well, and her shards were almost all together, so she was able to function more normally. Her sense of unity was more keen, and as a result she never felt it necessary to destroy everything in search of her missing parts. Most of the time.

However, there was an inkling of something primal in the back of her mid. Something that wanted her to fall over the edge, leave everything and everyone she encountered in her path completely ruined. But she usually was able to distract herself from this monstrosity by finding other things to focus on.

Homeworld didn't want that though. They needed to create something that was a force to be reckoned with. There wasn't room for error. So, they did everything that they possibly could to unlock this little inkling of hers, and eventually found the key: solitary confinement. Plume couldn't distract herself without a distraction.

They left her on her own whenever she wasn't fighting. She was driven into a state of mania, and came to be known as a major threat. But on one occasion, when it came time to return to her locked-up state, she resisted. Even in this state, driven only by the desire to become whole again, something insisted that solitude would not help. And so, she fled.

Eventually, Plume encountered a group of ragamuffin gems that she wanted to call her own. With time and persistence came recovery: Plume became Plume again. Nothing remains of her old life but an erratic destructive tendency from time to time.
