Description "So, how does it feel, Your Honor?" snickered Thibault.

Claude scowled at himself in the mirror and tugged at his unforgiving outfit.

"Ït's...it's both stifling and too big for me," he answered at last.

"They clothes were made to fit," Thibault replied evenly.

Minister Frollo's shoulders sagged. "That's not what I meant."

Poor Claude!

But on the other hand... a legend is born....

30 minute quickie. Teen! Frollo continues to haunt my thoughts. What a wonderful conflicted character.

*sigh* I wonder if the man we all respect and fear, or hate for some of us, was a bit awkward back in his law school days.

Howlingmojo In reply to AnaxErik4ever [2011-10-13 12:59:59 +0000 UTC]

He was awkward, or as Grissom in CSI used to say when asked what he was like in school:" A ghost."

Fitting.

I like this drawing. I like the expression, and I like his hands. He looks conflicted, even at such a young age. (Well, of course he's young and conflicted, because pretty much all young people are somewhat conflicted...) The idea of Frollo as a young man, though, is an interesting one - what he would have been like, what might have happened that shaped who he later became...that'll likely lodge itself in my mind.

I have so much back-story in my head for young Frollo. He is a really fascinating character and I find myself enjoying writing and drawing for him immensely ( nobody noticed Mojo, really? )

I'd like to imagine him as a man who starts out pretty much the same as his book counterpart, only to deviate on the accidental death of his younger brother. So this man really wanted to be a priest more than anything, but tradition and an incredibly overbearing father make him into a judge. With a grudge. ( and how odd would it be if Claude was a bastard son?)

Revolution-Nein In reply to Howlingmojo [2011-10-13 21:46:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, he is quite fascinating. Not in the way that the fangirls predominantly see him, but fascinating, yes. And that's rather awesome that you've got a detailed backstory for him in your head. I love it when you can do that with characters.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. Especially if you consider that much of the problem he seems to face, at least in the film, comes from tradition and authority that he lives with. (That is, he could have possibly dealt with his feelings for Esmeralda in more healthy, non-disturbing ways, but it would have deviated from what is expected of him.)

I find it funny that you use the term fangirls I haven't been a girl for quite some time! Still, I firmly see myself as one of those fangirls then.

But yes, speaking as a fledgling writer, I do see a lot of possibilities with the Janus-aspects of Frollo and his childhood. I still want to write him as a nobleman's bastard son of a Jewish ( or even gypsy) servant. That would be soooo fitting, wouldn't it? Can you imagine a surly, lanky boy doing anything, anything to gain attention and approval of his father? Even if said Father hates him, because Claude is a constant reminder of his own weaknesses?

Oh, the drama.

And it would explain the double feelings Frollo Jr has towards Esme. Can you say History repeating itself?

But I have a lot of working theories. Some I'll keep quiet about, as they appear in my stories ( for instance, the burning of Paris).

Cheers for starting this interesting topic! Is appreciated!

Revolution-Nein In reply to Howlingmojo [2011-10-13 23:20:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes, there are plenty of fangirls out there. But I do understand where you're coming from, and it's quite possible to maintain some of the principles of being a fangirl without being describable as a girl yourself. (Great, I just made fangirling sound really technical. )

Yes, there are quite a few possibilities there. I actually like the idea of him being a bastard son, although I can't articulate why. Maybe because it's...ironic? (I think the word applies...) And I can totally imagine him that way - it would actually do a lot in the way of explaining why he is the way he is, how his "always trying to be righteous" mindset evolved even in earlier life. (Oddly enough, it reminds me of the way I imagine Inspector Javert from Les Miserables, which is also Victor Hugo's...)

No, I prefer a select group of like-minded individuals who appreciate the appeal that a certain character named Claude Frollo de Tirechappe has, in any form, shape or incarnation! ( except the 1997 Richard Harris version, let's forget about that one...)

I am generalizing - basing my opinion on the clear statistics.
Besides, nearly all "interpretations" are nothings more than just a mockery - Disney HoND included.
Really, if you want make a movie using a source you simply can't understand is like a step back in the cultural sense for the commercial benefits. And it gets even worse when you decide to make some family, animated movie based on the literature for ADULTS.

Really...I want to forget about ALL of these interpretations...Not only with R.Harris one.

Howlingmojo In reply to AleksDeSilesia [2011-10-13 15:39:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, I do look forward to the Tim Burton approach, seeing as he has signed on to do a version somewhere in 2013.

But I still think all the versions have their own merit, I just try not to compare them too much, with book or others. Then you start viewing them with all sorts of expectations; the end-result is usually underwhelming.
I think of them as an alternative universe approach. Same with fanfiction really, I know you loathe and despise it, but I have read many a story that surpass the original writing. ( especially in the Harry Potter fandom). A lot on the other is tripe, but that makes discovering the true gems even more worthwhile ( and I have been around in the Snape fandom for a while, oh yes)

But in the end, to each his own.

AleksDeSilesia In reply to Howlingmojo [2011-10-13 15:55:05 +0000 UTC]

So, obviously, you prefer a "HoND fanfiction aka interpretation" more than original NDdP novel?

You know, I represent this canonic side of NDdP fandom (also that smallest one)so it's really beyond my personal sense of taste and logic when someone (actually many people) focus on that one, simple creation of Disney.

Howlingmojo In reply to AleksDeSilesia [2011-10-13 19:39:02 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn't say that the novel still stands at a lonely height for me. No doubt about it.

I just applaud variety, that's all.
