Description
Just for fun, here's a picture of my workspace. I work at a table that's located behind the living room couch - that way, my husband and I can watch TV at the same time, or I can watch him play video games. Good ways to pass the time while sculpting.I sculpt everything on a big tile (would never leave clay on treated wood), and I laid out my most frequently used tools on it. The three vials near the back of the tile are, from left to right, clay glaze, liquid clay, and super glue. Closer to the front of the tile, on the left, are three brushes - one for glazing, one for cleaning sculpts with rubbing alcohol, and one with a tiny tip for painting small details/my signature. Next to those is some wire and a couple of wire tools. I don't use these too often - tin foil is usually sufficient, but sometimes a bit of added wire is helpful. Next to those are my clay-working tools - a length of wire for when I need a small pokey tool or when I need to spread liquid clay, a metal tool with a dull blade that I use to cut in fingers and toes, a rounded plastic tool that I use to smooth joins, an Xacto blade that I use for making precise cuts, oh, and then the pen that I use to sign my figurines. To the right of that is a container for holding water, the box of beads that I use for eyes, a smaller tile for setting dragons on so that I can hold them up to eye-level, and my (awesome) daylight desk lamp. Other items scattered around my desk include paper towels, rubbing alcohol (for cleaning dust off finished sculptures), covered-up scrap clay, paper for leaching soft clay, tin foil skulls and bodies for armatures, and a few boxes of clay, supplies, and finished dragons. I also have a pasta roller off to the right, but it's cut off/partially hidden by the lamp.
What you don't get to see is the big bookshelf behind my desk where I keep all my other supplies, like the rocks and gems that I use, as well as even more clay. But yeah, it's a mess, so I'm not posting it. xD

That's still only about half the number that I usually bring to a convention.

Rinsing my brushes while painting or glazing. I also pour rubbing alcohol in there when I'm cleaning up my dragons because I don't like dipping straight into the giant alcohol container.

I'm glad you posted this, I love seeing people's workspaces!! You mentioned paper for leeching soft clay; how does that work? I'm curious to learn a new trick

It's a method for getting rid of the extra plasticizer in too-soft clay. Plasticizer is an oily material that makes clay soft, and sometimes there's too much of it and it makes the clay unworkably mushy. When this happens, I roll the clay out into a thin sheet and stick it between two sheets of paper for a couple hours. This leaves oily spots on the paper and firmer/drier clay. Then, mix the clay up afterwards to disperse the plasticizer throughout. Just don't let your clay sit on the paper for too long - if you leach out too much of the plasticizer, your clay will turn crumbly, which is perhaps even worse.

What, for just one tile? If they cost that much, I don't know how anyone could afford to tile anything.
