Description Just for fun, here's a picture of my workspace. I work at a table that's located behind the living room couch - that way, my husband and I can watch TV at the same time, or I can watch him play video games. Good ways to pass the time while sculpting.

I sculpt everything on a big tile (would never leave clay on treated wood), and I laid out my most frequently used tools on it. The three vials near the back of the tile are, from left to right, clay glaze, liquid clay, and super glue. Closer to the front of the tile, on the left, are three brushes - one for glazing, one for cleaning sculpts with rubbing alcohol, and one with a tiny tip for painting small details/my signature. Next to those is some wire and a couple of wire tools. I don't use these too often - tin foil is usually sufficient, but sometimes a bit of added wire is helpful. Next to those are my clay-working tools - a length of wire for when I need a small pokey tool or when I need to spread liquid clay, a metal tool with a dull blade that I use to cut in fingers and toes, a rounded plastic tool that I use to smooth joins, an Xacto blade that I use for making precise cuts, oh, and then the pen that I use to sign my figurines. To the right of that is a container for holding water, the box of beads that I use for eyes, a smaller tile for setting dragons on so that I can hold them up to eye-level, and my (awesome) daylight desk lamp. Other items scattered around my desk include paper towels, rubbing alcohol (for cleaning dust off finished sculptures), covered-up scrap clay, paper for leaching soft clay, tin foil skulls and bodies for armatures, and a few boxes of clay, supplies, and finished dragons. I also have a pasta roller off to the right, but it's cut off/partially hidden by the lamp.

What you don't get to see is the big bookshelf behind my desk where I keep all my other supplies, like the rocks and gems that I use, as well as even more clay. But yeah, it's a mess, so I'm not posting it. xD

I love this setup so much I'm still using it, even though I've moved since I took that picture.

what brand are the beads that you use for eyes?

HowManyDragons In reply to Swifty52 [2015-06-09 03:48:28 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea what brand they are, but the style is called 'bugle beads'. They're tube-like in shape.

Thanks. I have always liked that shape of eyes.

Out of curiosity, what do you use the pen for?

I use it to sign my figurines.

I thought you might use it for markings, haha XD
That makes sense though

HowManyDragons In reply to LunarDragoness [2015-02-07 09:46:58 +0000 UTC]

I tried to draw stripes on a dragon with a paint pen once, but it really did not work very well! I may have used a fineliner to try to get the ends pointier-looking, but I honestly don't remember at this point. xD
Nowadays I do little markings in either clay or acrylic paint.

Makes sense. Haha, I tried using Sharpie on a white dragon and it worked, but if I'd done it on a darker color it seems likely that it wouldn't have shown up. I also use pearl ex powder for markings, but it's pretty messy and I mostly do speckled patterns.

Well, the deviation description pretty much spells out what I use, but for the clay, I tend to use Premo brand polymer clay. It comes in many different colors and is pretty durable as far as polymer clay goes.

HowManyDragons In reply to CountryRefuge [2014-10-24 18:36:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha, polymer clay is one of those mediums where you can have as few or as many tools and supplies as you want. I think I'd be able to keep making dragons, even if all I had were a butter knife and some toothpicks (but I certainly wouldn't want to!). Since you can pretty much use whatever you want, I'm sure that after viewing a bunch of tutorials, it looks like everyone has a million different tools. I have more than I pictured here, but these are the ones I use 98% of the time.

What do you recommend to use to best keep opened up clay all nice and not drying outy? Thanks bunchesΒ Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HowManyDragons In reply to Stargazer1300 [2014-02-23 03:05:38 +0000 UTC]

I don't really have a problem with clay drying out - I keep everything covered to keep the dust off, more than anything. My recommendation is to cover up your open clay by using a box of some sort. I used to use an old shoebox until it started falling apart, but now I have a dedicated plastic box. Just make sure none of your clay touches the box walls - they might react and fuse together. :[ BTW, I keep all of my clay in the original plastic wrappers - I try to open them carefully so I can reuse the wrapper until the clay is gone.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stargazer1300 In reply to HowManyDragons [2014-02-23 04:03:12 +0000 UTC]

I like to keep the wrappers too; my method right now is a plastic bag. It gets inconvenient and a little messy sometimes though, so perhaps i'll dig up a box and use that instead. ThanksΒ Β

HowManyDragons In reply to Stargazer1300 [2014-02-23 20:27:42 +0000 UTC]

I use those little ziplock sandwich bags here and there to hold scraps and some of my smaller blocks of clay, but those go into a shoebox for storage so that they're not lying around everywhere. I tend to let my mess get away from me, so every little bit of organization helps!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stargazer1300 In reply to HowManyDragons [2014-02-26 01:41:42 +0000 UTC]

I find them helpful to keep separate colors away from other ones. Thanks for the info!

Togepilover01 [2014-02-23 00:15:57 +0000 UTC]

did you use plastic wrap to keep open clay in?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HowManyDragons In reply to Togepilover01 [2014-02-23 03:02:22 +0000 UTC]

Just my little bits of leftover scrap - custom colors that I don't want touching other colors, and the like. I leave the bigger color blocks in their original wrappers and keep them all in a box - it's the back-left box in the photo.

Togepilover01 In reply to HowManyDragons [2014-02-25 02:04:25 +0000 UTC]

HowManyDragons In reply to Togepilover01 [2014-02-25 10:34:45 +0000 UTC]

It won't dry out or anything. I keep my clay in a box to keep the dust off and to stay organized. :]

Yeah, I used to mark up my old wooden desk, back in the day. Before I switched to this table, I used to sculpt on a glass coffee table. Convenient and easy to clean, but terrible for my back because I had to sit on the floor. Also, it meant we couldn't ever put anything on the coffee table because it was always covered with my sculpting stuff. >_<

HowManyDragons In reply to LitefootsLilBestiary [2014-02-22 18:45:34 +0000 UTC]

I love that plastic tool! It was one of my very first clay tools and is rather beat up, but I've never been able to find a suitable replacement, and trust me, I've looked. The light in the room is good, as it faces southwest-ish, but I usually sculpt at night, so it doesn't do me much good.
