What are SOPA and PIPA?
The United States Congress is proposing two laws that address the problem of wide-scale unlicensed distribution on the Internet of motion pictures, songs, trademarked goods, and patented pharmaceuticals.
What would happen?
In both proposals, if they became law, the government of the United States would determine on application if a website was primarily engaged in unlicensed distribution. A court might hold a hearing but only if the people who run the website showed up. Otherwise, the site would be blocked by an order directing all websites in the United States with search capabilities or links to refuse to resolve any results or clicks to the blocked address.
Blocking addresses is hard to do without damaging every address on the Internet. The blocking methods suggested in these two proposals would completely confuse existing Internet functions. They would encourage multiple hacks to get around the blocks (and the proposals, it turns out, would be ineffective against very simple work-arounds). Maybe a few copyrights get saved but the price is opening massive wormholes in the Internet permitting hackers to re-direct traffic all over the place -- to malware, spyware, and phishing operations.
Who's affected by these proposals?
Identifying sites that "primarily" infringe on copyrights is full of complexity. Nobody agrees on what "primarily" means. Many sites like Wikileaks and other activist, political, and cultural websites need to copy material that is copyrighted by others who oppose their goals in order to criticize them or to bring important documents into the light. Some organizations, particularly political and religious ones, would use these laws if they were passed to try to block sites that republish controversial writings of a dictator or of a priest that they would prefer to keep under wraps.
Even harmless Internet behavior can be "primarily" an infringing activity: for example, a Tumblr account with still frames taken off of Glee. The unique address of the Tumblr account potentially could be blocked under these proposed laws.
What are the implications of SOPA?
SOPA, which would only block websites outside the United States, is a complete embarrassment to a country that has avidly supported the freedom of all peoples to express themselves openly particularly in the face of oppressive regimes. The role of the Internet in populist liberation movements is well-known and the tools used by these movements come from the people and companies that built the Internet and the Web -- not from motion picture companies and sellers of consumer goods. If the United States blocks websites over a Tom Cruise movie or a Rihanna song, other countries are certain to be encouraged by this to find cultural and political reasons to block websites from the Unites States and will refuse to open their borders, virtual or otherwise.
The Internet that has connected the world would become disconnected under these dangerous proposals.
The Internet is fragile. The worldwide protection of copyrights and trademarked goods is extensive and the laws for them already are powerful. By comparison, laws that protect an open Internet are few and far between.
The compromises that the White House calls for are going to be very difficult to reach. The motion picture studios and record companies are getting actors, directors, and singers to support SOPA and similar measures and have announced that they are not going to back down. Internet users are up in arms and protests are scheduled for January 18, 2012.
SOPA and the deviantART community
The community on deviantART is in a special position. Our members make art -- copyrighted content -- and they want it to be protected. But everyone on deviantART uses the Internet to expose themselves, their work and sometimes their souls to the world and we depend on an open platform for the very existence of the community.
DeviantART as a site and as a company promotes the rights of artists. However, SOPA and PIPA are poor "solutions", and we should all work towards other ways in which to resolve valid concerns about infringing conduct on the Internet that do not potentially harm free speech or the Internet itself.
Where do you stand?
How much power should copyright owners have?
How open must the Internet be?
Is free speech, a public right, more important than the personal rights of an artist?
Many claim that a culture can only grow and speak at all by protecting private rights in art, books, movies and music. Do you agree?

Update
Take a look at the deviantART front page using "Newest" in the Browse to see a remarkable community protest of SOPA and PIPA. As of January 20th, it now seems that SOPA and PIPA will not move forward through Congress. As previously mentioned, the White House opposed these bills before the protest began in earnest this past Wednesday. The White House reflects the position of the majority of the Democratic Party. Last night at the Republican Party primary debate in South Carolina (watch a video clip here ) all of the candidates came out against the bills. The frontrunner, Mitt Romney, was particularly forceful on the notion of an open Internet. In the video you can hear the crowd reactions as being quite negative towards SOPA and PIPA. So both of the major U.S. political parties are now aligned as against the proposals.
Meanwhile, the head of the Motion Picture Association of America has called for the White House to intervene and help big content and big tech reach compromises. See this New York Times article for more information about the issue.
Given the extraordinary grass-roots response to these proposals, almost overwhelmingly negative as reflected in all of the comments to this Journal and others on deviantART, this is a political hot potato everyone in politics will now want to stay away from.

Scanning and placing my art on a computer, from a single person who bought a print of mine, can result in my art being distributed and sold by others. SOPA could stop that.

And now you show your true manners. It's funny how people have the guts to call the other people names yet when meeting face to face they cover in fear. Hardly a good spokesperson for Sopa. Maybe you have true art, maybe not. But there are dosens of noobs with the art like the one posted in your gallery, easily mistaken. You charge your own friends 10-20$ for a drawing? greedy bastard.
You seem to have time to waste if your spending it over the net bickering over something you clearly have no idea over.

Is that like at the airport ? I heard they can confiscate your memory stick or laptop for any reason, take your files, and then say they contained traitorous files.
There are - too many of these crazy government groups. The only one I really remember recently was the ESA which prevented me from downloading a videogame.
Naturally I went to a different website and got it from there.
And - who are the Anonymous ? And are they really going to fight SOPA and if so, how ?

Yes. Actualy I think police could even come to your house without court order under pretex that they want to check your computer. Any digital file you have even if it's legal can be taken away if you have no proof of purchasing it.Don't know about anonymus.

Actually, no. No police officer can enter your house without a search warrant.
You may make them really mad but there ya go.
And that costs money. And unless -whoever- they think it is will make money in the search, then it just won't happen.
Policemen today function on the motive that they believe YOU think you are already guilty about stuff.
I saw a motorcycle policeman in traffic 5-days ago turn on his lights. 3 cars pulled over and when they realized the officer only wanted one 'sucker,' the other 2 vehicles 'crept' quietly away.
Clearly none of them did anything wrong but because they all had a guilty conscience about their driving, they all pulled over thinking they were going to get a ticket.
I would love to have heard what the officer told the other person so he could write them a ticket in the middle of stalled traffic.
Law only works if people obey it and believe it works. And law also unfortunately only works if people believe they are capable of guilt.
If some police officers truly got a search warrant for me, I would be more than mildly surprised and likely help them in their search - for whatever they needed - even if it incriminated me - because of my curiosity for someone to go through such lengths to find evidence.
Because SOMETHING they are looking for would have to be greater than what I am doing now and I would earnestly assist them.
In any case, I have never sold anything I downloaded, never broke in government establishments, never ran a business of my own of any kind, and never did anything on the internet to make money.
Nor do I have any of the other elements looked for, child porn, anti-patriotism acts (I think that's the term), I don't know anyone personally outside Texas and certainly no plans for bombs or anything like that.
I've launched a few bottle rockets in my time. That's the extent of my firework ability.
Nor do I do drugs nor converse with anyone about them nor do I know or am interested in selling them nor do I know anyone who does.
In total, I have never been arrested for anything - ever.
I like a nice park to ride the swing set and have a picnic like anyone else. That's - very little for the police to go on.
The police would look pretty foolish as I'm one of millions who do this, download movies and music for sole entertainment, and for them to single me out would show gross mismanagement of law enforcement and a terrible loss of 'profit' to them to do it.
It would be financially disadvantageous for them to arrest me.
That's the critical part. No profit, and loss of their own time and money to make the search and press the papers in the courts.
No - right now they're going after the BIG BOYS. The ones that have made MILLIONS of dollars illegally, like Megaupload. The ones laundering money. They are the important ones to them because some of that will trickle into law enforcement and congressmen pockets either because of reward for their capture, desist of activity, or arrest.
They may vehemently deny this, but greed is greed and unfortunately, money does make the world go around.
They're not interested in the people who haven't earned a penny from their gray-mark activities, nor have never spent a single second in prison.
It's - all - about - money.
If you don't have it - then you're really not that important to them.
I'm a firm believer in this.
And I get less than $4000 per year from retirement. No other income. Good luck even getting that to pay for the effort they would use to incriminate me.
They arrest me the best thing I can pay them back with is a cup of coffee and maybe a few of the spare Teddy Bears from my collection for the force or my $300 computer. *Grin*
Because that's all I have. They can get nothing else from me, literally.

Also a big collection of my Teddy Bears I've bought and have received as gifts throughout my life, and a little $300 computer playing easy listening music on some speakers and absolutely nothing else.
No drugs, no porn, no instructions for bringing down the government, no bombs, and not even a bottle of liquor or beer in the fridge to wet their whistle while they search for heaven knows what, just a jug of Kool-Aid and made with Sweet N Low no less.
Look here to see how I decorate my place: [link]
Hope it was worth the trip for them.

Whoa. A lot how like my place would look like if my mom wasn't there nagging to me clean (not like i do it anyway, she eventually gets fed up and does some of the cleaning anyway... )
But so what if it's a mess. All i got random clothes, paper, candywrappers, etc. spread out everywhere. It's not like anything gross like blood and guts or something like that.
Unfortunately she found my box collection and threw it away. And I liked my boxes. (Good thing she didn't find the rest hidden in my closet and under the bed.
)

I'm a packrat, my G/F keeps reminding me of this. She said naaaow she is going through my boxes and tossing out stuff and I don't have a say on it.
At this point I really can't argue. Most of what I collect are cereal box covers, paper plates with pretty designs in them, magazine clippings, newspaper clippings, and other assorted clutter.

Haha. My mom yells at me for that all the time. I even have problems getting rid of anything. I tend to collect mostly shoe boxes and I have a huge stash of old magazines somewhere and I only read like 10% of them (Thanks to Grandma who keeps giving me more XD lol What is she doing with all those anyway?)
Yesterday my mom yelled at me again cuz I didn't clean my room. I told her it was how I decorate, guess who didn't eat dinner Oohh well it was just spaghetti (for the 15th time this month.seriously mom cook something other than pasta)

Ogod Man there are SO many neat things you can do with shoeboxes !
I remember back in school you could cut a small pinhole on one side, have wax paper above it for diffuse lighting, and make a scene that you could view.
You could make spaceships out of them by decorating the inside with flourescent markers and a black light and your action figures.
And you could also use them to hold your most precious treasures, prizes from cereal boxes and gumball machines.
They need to sell shoeboxes by the dozen for a dollar at the 99 cent store and I would be right there, first in line. *Grin*
I never really did like Spaghetti cause it won't stay on the fork. If she insists on Italian food, ask for Lasagna !
You can't go wrong with that.

Haha Yeah... Too bad I already tried that. But no "I have to cook something everyone will eat and your sister is so damn picky and I ain't cooking 2 different meals so suck it up and eat it!" Yeah She doesn't seem to realize that no one else eating anymore and we all are starting to starve ourselves...(Damn if only I knew how to cook! But cooking just seems like too much work... lol)
And yes. Shoeboxes are the most useful thing on this planet!!!

Well, you can always cook brick Ramien noodles.
That's what I'm having for lunch, that, some frozie veggies on top and one sliced hot dog.
You won't starve, you just won't be eating spaghetti till the end of your days. *Grin*

Yep! I like Ramen, but it's boring on its own. That's why I usual add a bunch of random crap to it, like olive oil, paprika, pepper, parsley, etc. Last time I unknowingly put cinamon in there. It actually tasted pretty good. Wierd but good!
(Everyone says I eat strange things like when I put salt & pepper on my hotdogs people say I'm wierd. Or "STEAK & KETCHUP IS GROSS EWW!!!" but it tastes good. they are all insane. Ever try potato chips in ranch salad dressing? YUMMY! Doroitos taste good with salad dressing too.)

The problem is that US are already bickering with UK over the fact that one of the students entered pirated web and demanding him to be brought to US for justice. Are you sure after this that they wount try to go after this?
The fact that you have something downloaded is enough to dicriminate you as a pirate. And you will work in order to pay them. They don't need millions. 2000 per year from every person in Texas does make a lot of money.
And you still forget the Airport security checking your laptop. And they can take it away.

No, I don't forget airports. That appeared in the Star Telegram, and =THAT= is both true and scary and one of the biggest shames of our country today.
Yes, they can confiscate anything containing media at the airport.
There is quite a snip about this. You are 100% accurate on this which is why I don't even enter airports today.
[link]
If my computer were ever confiscated however, I think they would find a lifetime collection of Hanna Barbera cartoons and cheesy 1960 sci-fi's and if that's a desperate life-impending threat against our national security, well that's news to me.
I've been trading software and media since I was 13-years old (serious). If they haven't done anything to me now, they don't plan to.
And I'm in constant contact with my internet provider, asking them questions about my downloading habits, my bandwidth, etc.
They say I'm clean - all the way around. I check this once a month.
You sure are agitated Knikznik. *Grin* Let me see the police visit me first and then I'll see your viewpoint then.
Read up here:

And here is your big scare:

And I only share my downloaded media with my friends, all 4 of them including my G/F. Yep, I keep a close knit.
Give me something solid, Kniznik to make your argument valid, otherwise you're more paranoid than me and that deserves some kind of medal.

Thanks, this links calmed me down a little. I'm not happy about them but also less worried. I mostly got on what I've read from others or a few links that I got while reading.
I'm mostly worried since I do actualy download games from time to time mostly to try out before I buy the dvd or cd, or to replace my russian one's.
You sayed you've been trading software. Did you trade with friends or downloaded over the net?

dw817 In reply to kniznik [2012-01-26 15:19:36 +0000 UTC]
Any games, if at all, I usually buy cause they're $1 at Half-Price Books & Records.
Occasionally my friend Chris will take a game I download, but not very often, mostly cause he's very picky about them.
My main interest in video games lies in emulators, especially SNES and PSX because you can save/load your game anywhere at any time, and the fact I can run them on my portable PSP as well.
I do have a few favorite window games, like the series of Samantha Swift and Bejeweled 3, but I rarely play them.
As for media, I used to get the audio CDs and DVDs loaned from the library, but then I have the tedious task of converting them or, more likely, they are scratched to heck so you can't work with them.
Now it's much easier to find them on the internet and download them already converted to MKV or AVI or WMA or Mp3.
And THAT media, I trade with my friends.
If I ever upload media, it's usually a favorite scene or clip from a movie, about 5-minutes or so, that I upload to google docs and it's just for a handful of online friends then.
If my Online friends are interested in an entire movie, I give them the link so they can download it themselves.
I don't take the time to re-upload a whole movie, that's too much work, so I keep tabs of links where I find good things in notepad.
As for my 'know in person' friends I see every week, they want DVDs, not computer media movies so I get those from Netflix and then use DVDFab 8 to copy them direct.
Me ? Meh - not so much interest. If I want a movie, I'll download the MKV of it in 4-minutes or so from Mediafire.
I don't =HAVE= to have the DVD of it like my friends seem to want all the time.
On a different note. You mentioned you are interested in Russian media ? If you have a library, they may very well carry that for you, and here in the states, you can check out 10 audio CDs and 10 DVDs per week and even renew them ONLINE for a total of 3-weeks if you so choose.

No, thouse are games in russian language. sadly english windows doesn't seems to read ingame language.
I had an argument with co worker today and came to an idea. Libraries are technicaly like pirate websites since you can take books for free. That means that goverments are pirates. They distribute copyrighted books for free.

dw817 In reply to kniznik [2012-01-27 02:16:40 +0000 UTC]
Well, you can't TAKE the books from the library. They are loaned. You are expected to return them in a fixed amount of time or you would wind up paying for them.
I - really wouldn't think of the government as pirates although I'm not against the idea !
Certainly when I worked for the government myself, they are a curious bunch of very odd people with bizarre rules and regulations, at least that was my impression of them.
Also, what do you mean by ingame language for video games ?

You know how some games that are made in japan are in japanese? the same with games made in Russia.
Yes, you borrow the book. But when you read it you will not need it anymore no will you buy it ever. unless you really want to have it. It all depends on the people. Suprisingly how similar it is to whats happening over internet.

"Sopa and Pipa in coma and would have made what US made legal."
Okay, are you saying then that it is already legal or illegal these websites are shutdown ? And if not SOPA, who shut them down ?
I'm - concerned about this weird group I keep hearing called Anonymous. What are they and how, if at all, can they help on a reality level ?

Anonymous is a group that says it was established in 1960. I'm - not certain. They presume to be a group that will hit hard against SOPA, that they are 'displeased' with what has happened recently.
It could be a bunch of teenagers in black robes and video cameras for all I know. But I do know as for the internet people who are angry at having their favorite servers throttled by the government right now, unless they are praying to the Almighty Creator, there is little else to go on right now.
And I don't mind wearing the mask to show my support for them, at least for the moment.

Failing that, I'm inclined to agree with others, it's a bunch of kids in masks who are basically angry at the world but aren't really going to do anything about it.
