This is basically what hapened to me, except I would happen to add 2 extra slides to my comic.

Xtra slide 1: Hears a ghast scream in the nether.
Xtra slide 2: Blocks off nether and hides in stress-room in house (yes I have one. It is also titled 'the creeper bunker')

I use buckets of lava in the shape of the gate, using water when appropriate. Saves the diamond pick and time, that way.
