Can almost imagine some ancient dynasty trying to build a castle on top of it.

In Chinese history , there were no real "castles", but fortresses and great walls. During Han dynasty, there was a kind of castle-like building called "Wu Bao (坞堡)", but with the strengthening of unified social system and the weakening of the power of feudal lords, this kind of building was gradually eliminated.

Forgive my generic western term, most early castles were fortification walls and defence turrets built around existing buildings.

Words are just symbols, there will be deviation and ambiguity.
