Personality:
Curious | Insightful | Self-confident
Exuberant | Intelligent | Blunt
Cloud headed | Smug | Reckless
Alaric is a curious soul, always has his head buried in a book or up in the clouds. He enjoys learning anything that can give him insight on past, present and future occasions - either learning through books or through his divination spells. Although he prefers to live on his own, he feels a need to use his powers to help those who need it most, always excited to give it his all. Though sometimes he overestimates his abilities and will charge in without thinking things through regardless of the consequences. Alaric has a lively energy which makes him very approachable.
Alaric isn’t one to beat around the bush. He will always tell it to you straight, not thinking of your feelings on the matter, not in a sense of meaning to be rude but with the thought that that truth has much more meaning over conflicting thoughts on the subject. You can tell from just having a conversation with him that he is very confident in his own abilities, he is not afraid to show off his powers and then sometimes -most of the time- brag about it. He thinks highly of his own intelligence and when in the company of others it never fails for him to complement himself. With his vast knowledge of random things, Alaric will almost always have some sort of insight on many different situations. Even if it's sometimes just rambling off useless information that he thinks is interesting.
History (Hermit Background):
TLDR;
Alaric was raised to be a Diviner like his parents - travelling mercenaries who wandered near Podmanshire and the immediate area. During a stop along one of the towns, the First Surge hit.
Magic coursed through everything like a violent wave. It seemed to spark through everything, fueling change within the people who felt it. Fueled by an intense curiosity of the world beyond his family, Alaric left town and ventured to a cave. In this cave was a large, towering pile of fish bones, which he felt was a seriously bad omen of things to come. Wrought with worry, Alaric brought this omen to the attention of the townsfolk - convinced that the omen was about the town they were in currently. Unable to convince the townsfolk, or even his parents, Alaric tried his best to tell the people about their upcoming doom, but no one believed him.As a result, he was labelled as a madman, exiled by the town and disowned by his family. He lived outside the town, staying close in the hopes that once the time did eventually come, that he could maybe do something to help.
However, that proved not to be the case. There was a surprise attack on the town which led to the destruction of the town itself, as well as many casualties. There were also a large number of missing people that they were unable to find after the battle, his parents included.. With his parents missing, and the town now gone, Alaric had no idea what to do. He tried his best to find them, but even his powers of Divination were of no help to him. He decided to head to Lumivaara to become a better Diviner, helping people along the way.
---- Long Version ----
Alaric was born to a family of wandering mercenaries that travelled throughout the northeastern part of Marwani near Podmanshire.
Both his mother and father were skilled wizards, trained in all manner of magics but excelling particularly in Divination, a school of magic that gave them insights on missing items, persons, and particular jobs of great value.
At a young age Alaric began his training in wizardry, as it was a family custom to do so. As he grew older, it became very apparent that he had quite the knack for Divination, much like his parents.
During his family’s travels the group stopped in a town to make some quick money and restock on resources before heading out again. During their stay in the town there was a sudden wave of magic that blasted through everything - causing confusion, fear, and a general sense of wonder about what had happened.
This was the effect of the First Surge. After this event Alaric found himself curious about the world, deciding to head out of the town to explore the nearby area, while his parents were busy with their work. During his exploration, he found a deep cave system through a small opening at the bottom of the riverbed. Inside this cave he found a large, ominous, towering pile of assorted fish bones. Just at the sight of it, Alaric felt sick to his stomach. Alaric was convinced this was a bad omen and it gave him a feeling that something bad may happen in this area sometime soon.
In a panic, Alaric went to tell his family of this bad omen. His parents were sceptical. With his parents not believing him, he took them to see the cave. When he arrived back at where he thought the cave was, Alaric could not find the entrance again. When he tried to explain that it was just a warning and a bad feeling, his family told him that it was probably nothing, and not to worry about it.
Unconvinced and very worried about the people here, Alaric snuck away from his family one afternoon while they were busy helping around town (and being paid incredibly well to do so), to tell the people and the leaders of this bad omen and to try to prevent anything bad from happening.
In the middle of town Alaric told them what he had felt while in this cave, telling everyone who passed by. More and more people began to show up, watching this young boy rant and rave about some sort of upcoming “bad event”. With the First Surge still fresh on everyone’s minds, the town began to panic. Worried that this doomsayer’s words might somehow be true.
It didn’t take long before Alaric was brought before the council. He was called a lunatic, a madman - causing panic amongst the townsfolk who had just begun to get their lives back together. With Alaric doing this he put his family's reputation on the line as renowned diviners, but even after a harsh warning from the council, he still continued to give his warnings to the people, hoping that someone, anyone would listen to him. As a result of this, Alaric’s family was forced to exile him instead of having their reputation ground into the dirt, so he left.
For the next few years, nothing of note seemed to happen. No “bad event” of any sort. Alaric found himself questioning whether this bad omen was false or not. But even so, he was more terrified of what could happen to this village, so he stayed. He made his home only a few hours away from the town as he feared for their safety. He hoped that by being close to them, they would eventually listen to his warnings.
He made any money he could off of travellers passing by - reading items they had with odd, cryptic or forgotten languages with his comprehend languages spell he had learned while in exile.
Occasionally he would go to neighboring towns to make extra money for food, offering his services there.. He began to develop an interest in reading and books, enamoured by the different ways things were explained from different culture’s points of view as well as gaining a wealth of knowledge.
One night, he awoke from his sleep to the sound of screams and the clashing of blades from somewhere off in the distance. Panicked, Alaric made haste to the town, but by the time he arrived it was too late. The town was destroyed, with the few survivors leaving the remnants of what had once been their home and the faint sounds of cries in the distance. During the night the town had been attacked - from who or what, they weren’t entirely sure.
Alaric was happy to have his feelings proved right, but he also felt remorse. He had not been able to help these people. They simply hadn’t listened to him. Maybe if he had done something differently. Maybe if his family had stood by him - maybe they would have believed.
After helping what survivors could be found, Alaric asked if anyone had seen his family - but no one knew where they had gone, or if they were even still alive. They weren’t the only ones who were missing - a large number of people from the town were unaccounted for.
Unable to provide any further help for the town that was now in shambles, Alaric then set off in hopes of finding any information about the whereabouts of his family. After searching for weeks, he found no trace of them. He tried to use his magic to find them, and it became apparent that his magic was simply not strong enough to reach them, wherever they were. He refused to admit that they could be dead.
Unable to find any more information about the whereabouts of his family, Alaric decided it would be best to focus on becoming a better Diviner. Maybe if his powers of Divination were stronger, he would be able to find them. Alaric then headed towards the great city of Lumivaara, ready to learn more about his powers and help people along the way.
