I am writing to you today to extend my recommendations of employment to a colleague of mine. This gentleman is traveling to Lumivaara for study within the Crystal College (that he has expressed avid interest in) and particularly its vast library. I have worked with him for three years, but, I admit it feels longer.
While I give this recommendation with full knowledge he will excel in any position available, I feel as though a description of what is to come is in order:

•He is laser-focused on tasks and finding not only answers, but outcomes. Properly motivated, an unstoppable force of curiosity and investigation. Stubborn, to put it lightly.

•He often keeps to himself during his studies. Interruptions to this habit can make him a rather...sour individual to converse with. Though often any kind of thing deemed an annoyance can be responded with smart remarks. It's frankly entertaining, if not off-putting initially. He takes his work very seriously. His pride knows no bounds.

•While his personality can be unpalatable when working, outside of that he's alarmingly charismatic, at least with understanding how to acquire information from all sorts of people and make a good deal. I often wonder if he was a businessman at some point.

•His whims are fickle and ennui can strike within a moment. My own collection in the wizard tower has only held his interest for this long as each book on the shelf has been scrutinized for secret details. A promise of knowledge has always been quite a motivator, especially in relation to the arcane.

Most importantly, I believe he's one that has been affected by The Surge. His capabilities in the arcane are quite proficient, so much so he has wandered off into the wilds and returned not only in one piece, but with a variety of items that seem equally enchanted by the Surge. I've been researching them as well as sending them off to be evaluated, but it grows my curiosity in what else is out there, as I'm sure many of your scholars wonder as well.
I believe his talents would be of great use to you in growing the collection of tomes and scrolls lost to the wilds of the land, he may show a bit more care to these artifacts than any common adventurer you're seeking.

P.S. His name is Belial, and as his name implies, he can be an absolute devil. I'll be damned if he doesn't get a job done, though.

Background:
Belial does not come from a well-known place, rather, from the underbelly of a city. His upbringing was not...kind. To get by, he learned cards and made money when he could at whoever-crossed-him's own expense. He learned to talk to people, get their interest and manipulate his wants from them, whether they realized or not. He grew up by being on his own and taking opportunities, and flourished. He took a liking to reading and writing, a habit to suppress unhelpful emotions, likely, not that he'd admit that even if the world burned. An escape from a miserable life as a nobody just getting by. More than that, he knew no one was around to miss him if he was gone, and he was a person that wanted to leave a mark on the world. Restlessly, he settled in for a long con of getting out of this hovel.

The inevitable struggle became that he was easily outwitted and manipulated by those touched by the Surge-- as he was just another charlatan against Elves with the magic of deception and charms. He couldn't compete with magic. He couldn't put up with being at the bottom again, not after all he'd done to pick himself up... When you can't beat them, join them.

He rooted through libraries, curio shoppes, anything, until he found an old tome of secrets, maddening in its own right and filled with sinister arts. After months to years of searching and researching, it came to him. He made a pact with...something. That night he barely remembered anything but a hum somewhere in his mind, whispers incomprehensible, what felt like an electrical shock and the smell of smoke wafting from an extinguished candle. In the darkness, a signet ring lay in front of his fallen form, the dark emerald glint too enticing not to immediately put on and never remove.

The magic he wields is borrowed, though he still chalks it up to scholarly studies. Amazing how magic can make people respect you a bit more. After all, not everyone was rich enough to go to some wizard academy, but now if only he can further his magical prowess... Books were always a favorite past time, and now being somebody he had better access to them, especially after befriending a wizard seeking scribes.

His curiosity for where this magic comes from is intriguing, if not terrifying, and worth pursuing. His sights are set on the most prestigious place of study he can think of for answers to questions he hasn't even thought to ask. His mentor, Zandervlad, has encouraged adventuring, finding new items and spellbooks that have been hidden from the world, or robbed from it, to further the land's understanding and progress of the arts, technology, and livelihood. Hell, that sounded like he'd be the first one to get his hands on them in the end. Even if it involved adventuring with other people...
