Description

"I think it would benefit us all if you took this more seriously."

Name:
Lucian Rose
Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 24
Height: 6'0"
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Warlock (Raven Queen)
Background: Haunted One
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Personality:

Gloomy | Intimidating | Tired | Cautious | Dependable

As his clothes and consistently weary expression would suggest, Lucian isn't exactly the brightest of people. His usual disposition carries an air of unfriendliness at best, and on its worst days he definitely seems like someone you'd much rather avoid than try speaking to. If a pick me up or a fun time if what you're looking for, he's not the person you go to. If anything, he's the person you go to if you're looking for a needless re-explanation about how the world is unforgiving. Certain events in his life have shaped him into being the sleep-deprived and negative person he is, and most of the time he simply doesn't have the energy to try feigning cheerfulness. His time and effort, he thinks, is better spent focusing on what's important to him, which would be his job and burning grudge against undead. One could probably argue that there is probably some worth in at least trying to be a little more amiable, but, well, easier said than done, in his case.
Despite all his negativity, there isn't a complete lack of redeemable traits. On the surface he seems unwelcoming and ill-tempered, but in truth he's a fairly calm and civil individual. His attitude can come off as mean spirited at times, but a lot of it is due to him simply not having the energy to put up a friendly front. He is not without manners, and he will definitely apologize if he notices he's unintentionally slighted you. Once you can get past the air of doom about him he's actually quite reliable, and isn't the type of person to pull back on a job or promise. He might not be the most enthused person in the world, but if he works with you he's got your back and will make sure to pick up after you in case things go haywire. Granted, impulsive types tend to give his cautious self a headache, but he'll try to deal with it as best he can. Even though he's not particularly willing to be openly compassionate or caring for others, he's still not a fan of people dying while he's around.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Level-Headed: For the most part, he's very difficult to set off and is willing to put up with a lot. Nothing really scares him these days either, so he's not the type to be easily frightened and lose nerve.
+ Reliable: If you have him on your side, he will do his best to be someone that you can depend upon. He is incredibly thorough and cautious, so not a lot tends to slip past him in that regard.
+ Pragmatic: Able to be reasoned with, and reasonable. He's interested in finding practical solutions and is good at not straying from tasks on hand.

+/- Workaholic: He takes his work extremely seriously and does an excellent job in finishing tasks, but in contrast, he really doesn't take enough time to relax and apply self care.
+/- Forthright: If you need an honest opinion, he is someone you can go to. He doesn't see much use in lying, but his criticism can be harsh and colored by his gloomy nature.
+/- Intimidating: Intimidation can serve as a useful tool in order to scare people into shape, but it is also double edged in that it makes him appear unfriendly and hard to approach.

- Pessimistic: It's not all that hard to see that he tends to be a "glass half empty" sort of person and assumes the worst result of any given situation. Not uplifting at all.
- Distant: He dislikes talking too deeply about himself, and struggles when it comes to facing the grief he needs to come to terms with. He would rather ignore it out of fear of feeling empty again.
- Low-Energy: He doesn't have very much enthusiasm to do anything outside of his daily routine, so he can be quite difficult to get along with.

History:

TL;DR: For the majority of his life, Lucian lived in a small town with a single mother, where they worked as Florists. The Surge initially seemed to have no impact on his life until a wave of undead risen by a newly fledged necromancer invaded his home town, which resulted in the loss of his mother. Afterwards, his resentment towards the undead made the Raven Queen take an interest in him and they formed a pact- she would grant him power to enact his revenge, so long as he would also act in her interests by dealing with the unsavory types that try to tamper with death. With the pact sealed, he now finds himself working at the Adventurer's guild to find targets within his interests, and also some money for his work.

It all started with a single woman and a hasty getaway, in reaches far from Lumivaara. Lucian didn't know much about his origins, or his mother's for that matter, but it was the one thing he was told to never pry into. How could he refuse, after seeing how somber she looked at the question? All he was told was to never seek out that past, to never look for his father, and to never try finding that place. As such, he stopped asking. He was happy with his mother, so whatever it was that they left behind them shouldn't matter.
What followed was a modest but happy life in a small, no name town at the edge of the country. Lucian's mother lived as a humble florist, so growing up the boy would find himself surrounded by all sorts of flowers and the hum of his mother as she arranged a bouquet for her next customers. Not being the most outgoing child himself, he remembers the long hours spent with her in the shop, carefully tending to the sprouts and giving quiet motivational speeches to help them grow. In hindsight the latter probably didn't actually do anything, but is a fond memory nevertheless. Occasionally he would muse about going out into the world and become like those cool adventurers, but in the end he'd always come back to the same conclusion: he was far too fond of his mother, and just the thought of leaving her on her lonesome broke his heart. Sometimes she'd insist too, that he should go out in the world, but he always shook his head. He was happy where he was, helping her. He'd be okay, staying in that tiny village and living out the rest of his life in peace.
Of course, fate would not be so kind.
At its appearance, the surge had only been a strange wind that blew across the fields for a brief moment. Lucian remembers scrambling to stabilize the hanging flowerpots as they were jostled by the sudden breeze, and the ripple that had went across the wheat fields across the horizon. There were murmurs throughout the town- rumors of a great event of sorts, but to Lucian it didn't really matter much. Him and his mother hadn't been blessed with any sort of magic, and neither had the townsfolk that he had come to know. Life continued on, unaffected.
    ... Or so he'd thought.
It was one fateful night after collecting wildflowers that he saw the fire in the distance. The basket immediately fell from his hands, and he found himself running, cursing the burning in his legs and the fact that he couldn't go any faster. He remembers breaking into the village, only to be met with the baleful cries of undead. Panic surged in his system. The rest is a frantic blur. He remembers the way his hands stung from clutching a stray ax all too tightly, his only defense against the onslaught of mindless bodies. He remembers running to his home, their flower shop, only to see shattered vases and trampled petals. He remembers all too clearly the red dragged across the floor.

He remembers.

His mother's body, already motionless.
The glazed over eyes that turned towards him.
The horrible sound that escaped his mouth as blade met rotted flesh.
His despair as he realized he had no power to change things.

After that, he doesn't remember much.

Local lumberjacks had taken him in following that night, but ever since then, he's had trouble feeling all too much. People weren't sure what happened that day. Most people had escaped, in actuality, making Lucian's mother a rare case. Why she had stayed?... Well, probably to wait for him. She always made a point to wait for him. Was it his fault?
Pushing down the question, life went on and Lucian began to think. With the surge came new monsters, new threats, some people reasoned, but a particular rumor that circulated around the town made Lucian's wounds burn, then fester. It was a rumor regarding a necromancer, granted power by the surge. One that released the wave of undead as a little display and test of their newfound powers. After not feeling anything for the longest time, he awoke once again to a burning hatred, and the desire to seek justice. It would be then that a little raven would come to visit him.
It was strange, hearing the bird speak, but what it promised was something that he could not deny: power. The power to seek his vengeance. The power to change things. He hated undead, after all, and so did the sender of the little bird, to a certain extent. Surely then, it would benefit them both to work together. For the sender, she would have an agent in the material world, and for Lucian, he would have an opportunity to enact his dark desire. He accepted. The pact was sealed.

The townsfolk can't quite explain what happened after that. All too suddenly the young man had acquired a strange little bird companion, and just as quickly did he decide to pack up his things and start wandering into the distance.
____

Now, he finds himself working in the guild in Lumivaara, largely because the extermination of monsters and undead tend to line up within the interests of himself and the guild. It also never hurts to get paid.

Trivia:
- Likes: Flowers, Singing, Birds, Libraries, Cooking, Heroes, Pink, Sunny Weather
- Dislikes: Recklessness, Undead, Kids, Strong Unpleasant Smells, Crowded Places, The Dark
- In terms of developmental direction, I'd foresee something like him learning to let go and get past his sadness. Currently he's too focused on dwelling on a past he can't change rather than working towards a better future where he can be happy.
- His mother's favorite nickname for him was Lucy
- He likes singing because his mother used to do so all the time when they worked together. He's also a pretty damn good singer himself, but good luck getting him to actually put his heart into things.
- His raven's name is Romeo! He is very smart but likes to act dumb and cute because that gets him more attention.
- His name is Lucian because his mother wanted his name to be associated with light and a bright future, which is in stark contrast to the life she came from and the future he would've had if she had stayed.
- Favorite Flowers: Gladiolus, Carnations, Roses, Daffodils, Sunflowers
