It almost felt like the third movie didn't know what it wanted to be. I mean, jeez! Choose a direction and stick with it! (Same could be said for S22 of Thomas, but that's a review for another time.)

Exactly! That’s how films should work. If there’s to be a sequel, there should be a trilogy, and that’s it. Like the Star Wars Prequel trilogy, the original trilogy and then the sequel trilogy.
Why must there be a special every year anyway? I mean, there wasn’t a season every year.

I think it must be due to the fact that the show has been in constant production since 2001 (probably not; this is guesswork on my part) and there's never a moment for a break from new content. Even in 2009, we got Hero of the Rails.
