Description When it comes to difficult times like these, we all need something to do in order to keep ourselves sane. I've been watching a bunch of videos on YouTube by several people for the past several months or so and that was when I decided to get back into the LEGO hobby.

This is among the models that I've worked on and have just completed. Thomas' face is sourced from an older Tomy/Plarail model glued onto a black 2x2 round LEGO plate (I'm hoping to give the face a repaint one day into a light gray with white and black detailing), the wheels come from Big Ben Bricks and the siderods from TrainedBricks. Otherwise, the entire model is 100% LEGO.

My take on Thomas is that he's based upon an LMS Jinty 3F with extended side tanks, which is a close enough equivalent to the LB&SCR E2. It was inspired by a video by Mike Lyons (Proteus on SiF) called Tanks for the Retcon where he proposes that instead of an E2, Thomas be a Jinty instead. That makes a lot of sense for the following reasons:
  • Like the E2s, the Jinties have a power class rating of 3F. Unlike the E2s, which were basically the locomotive equivalent to the DeLorean, the Jinties were actually reliable in terms of performance.
  • The original stories took place in the mid-1920s, which meant that by then, Thomas would've been at least a decade old, and Gordon would've been just about newly built (then again, locomotives might age differently to humans, but I don't think anyone's really explained that). The Jinties were built as early as 1924 and the last one entered service in 1931, which would've made Thomas younger than Gordon, Edward, Henry and James as the Reverend intended.
  • The Severn Valley Railway had their own No. 47383 painted to resemble Thomas for their very own Day Out with Thomas events in the late 90s/early 00s. Not really significant, but it's worth pointing out.
  • Overall, I'm very pleased with the final result. I might make some changes to the model every once in a while like a skinnier funnel (I haven't quite figured out what part to use, however). Will I do more like these? Absolutely; I've got work in progress models for Annie and Clarabel as well as one for James, and I'm even planning one for Percy as an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 saddle tank. And maybe some rolling stock too.

I'm actually reminded of the LEGO Duplo toyline.
