BNSF SD70MACs 9713 (ex-BN 9713) and 9684 (ex-BN 9684) lead a northbound unit coal train out of the Great Falls, MT yard on the morning of November 14, 2009. Since the opening of the new mine at Broadview a few months ago, the Great Falls subdivision has seen several coal trains a week.I was talking with one of the BNSF employees in the Great Falls yard yesterday and he told me that before the mine opened the plan was to only send about 10-20% of the coal trains along the Great Falls sub, with the rest going west along the MRL, but just before the mine opened the railroad changed its mind and about 70-80% of the traffic out of the mine is coming through Great Falls. That's just fine with me, as it gives me lots more opportunities to shoot.

funny story with these ones.
Few years back we just left on a road trip, one of those pick a road and just go kind.
Anwyays, we're talking about trains and my hubs says 'my goal is to get an executive loco picture' - the green & tans like these. We'd just left home, half our out heading up the Cajon Pass...lol...the we look down at the line and there's one heading down the hill. "well, guess our trip's over, goal met!"

it was just weird that one shows up just as we talked about it, they're extremely rare down here in Socal. We've never seen one since...about 5 yrs ago now.
the trip itself was great, we scouted 3 big boys & drove by UP then up north into Yellowstone
