Description Another shot from September 28, 2007. A large pronghorn buck grazes on still-green grass, seemingly unconcerned with my presence. He knew I was there, but it didn't seem to bother him. Usually, once a pronghorn knows I'm near they move away quickly, but this guy didn't.

Thank you for the feature, I'm honored.

But...

The animal in my photo is not a Peninsular Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana peninsularis). It is an American Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana americana) which is not an endangered species.

Of the four subspecies, the Peninsular and Sonoran Pronghorns are the only two that are endangered. The Mexican Pronghorn is threatened, but holding. The American Pronghorn is thriving and has a healthy population that is expanding naturally back into areas the species had been absent from for decades. I have seen herds of American Pronghorn that number nearly 500 animals.

Again, I really appreciate the feature, but my photo does not feature an endangered species.

Beautiful marking on these animals.

Do these shed their horns like deer & elk do?

Their horns are not shed, but they do shed the horn sheath.

Wonderful shot. It must know the difference between a camera and a gun.

That's most likely right! People think I'm exaggerating or just kidding when I tell them that just before hunting season starts, the number of pronghorn in the park triples or even quadruples, then when the season is over they leave again until the dead of winter.
