Sovereign is widely regarded as Earth’s premier superhero. She is recognized the world over for her accomplishments and her record of service has earned the respect of many of her peers.

But while her heroic actions are well-recorded, very little is known about Sovereign herself. Even her closest allies can say little about her history or origins. She does not appear to have any particular area of operations and instead seems to go wherever there is a crisis, regardless of where or when it occurs. She has eschewed all but the most basic interaction with the media despite her highly public appearances.

Another of Sovereign’s unusual qualities is the mutable quality of her powers.

Most metahumans exhibit one or two powers, with comparatively few possessing multiple powers. Moreover, once a metahuman’s powers become active they rapidly stabilize to a certain level and remain there indefinitely. A metahuman may be able to refine their control over their abilities or discover new applications for their powers, but they will almost never become “stronger”.

However Sovereign appears to be an exception to the aforementioned trends. She was observed to possess superhuman strength, invulnerability, and flight upon her first public appearance. Over the next few months her powers appeared to rapidly increase. She went from straining to lift a tanker truck to supporting a collapsing building with ease. Whereas during her first months of activity she would at least be slowed down when being shot at, she would simply walk through a hail of gunfire as bullets bounced harmlessly off her. A top recorded flight speed of 200 mph suddenly rose to supersonic velocities when she was seen assisting hurricane relief efforts in three different Pacific nations in the same day.

Even more surprising is that Sovereign appears to be developing new powers in addition to her old ones, something that is unprecedented amongst metahumans. Two years after her debut, she manifested energy manipulation powers when she projected beams of energy from her eyes while combatting an extraterrestrial incursion in the Arctic. Another year later she generated some sort of distortion field to deflect a solar flare that threatened to destroy Earth’s communications satellites. Six months after that she used some sort of telekinetic power to hold up a critically damaged suspension bridge in Japan.

No one is certain how it is possible for Sovereign to manifest such a diverse and apparently unrelated series of powers and the enigmatic heroine is not volunteering any answers.
