Forming a chrysalis, it grows to the size of a fishing boat. It floats to the surface, bobbing through the stagnant waters of a ship graveyard. The colours drain as it drifts in aimless silence.

I was severely off the mark when I predicted this phase to be simple. Part of that was due to working overtime at my job (holiday seasons are hectic in retail). The actual challenge was the phase itself. Sketching a spherical object of massive size bobbing in the water was not something I've done before.

This is actually my second draft reworked over the first. I wasn't happy with how I did the perspectives of everything - I was struggling to figure out the size of the prompt & ships alongside their placements. eventually I've settled onto what you see here now. The cocoon itself was originally intended to be more like an eyeball with the nerve ends, but it soon became a combination of that, a peeled orange & a rose.

The tanker in the background is based on the tanker from Metal Gear Solid 2, the "USS Discovery".

Inspired by Shin Godzilla, "Devil's Symphony" is about a parasite that eventually becomes the destroyer of everything.

Whilst I’ll still be using fineliners, I’m also going to use pencil more often for some backgrounds.

This’ll be my toughest Inktober challenge yet, but hopefully it’ll teach me to do more art outside my comfort zone!
