I know it's old news, but I don't think nearly as many people would have complained about Sega making an overly edgy Sonic game with swearing and guns if they went this route, and I'm barely joking. No, really, the Sonic franchise has such an iconic and diverse cast of characters that it makes me wonder why more of them haven't gotten a standalone game to themselves yet. Imagine the possibilities; a beat-em-up game starring Knuckles, a vehicular combat game like Twisted Metal that stars Tails, a mystery detective game with Team Vector, a Majora's Mask-esque time travel adventure game with Silver, I could keep going. And yeah, Sonic fans are kind of infamous for complaining when the Sonic series experiments and does anything different, but I think that has less to do with people not liking change (although that's probably some of it) as much as it does the fact that Sonic games are typically platformers with level design built around going fast, and that's what most people buy Sonic games for, and for some reason Sega sometimes seems to have a hard time understanding that. Sonic Unleashed mainly got criticized for its night stages, because it didn't really matter if they were competently designed and played well, it's not what people wanted from a Sonic game, it's not what people spent money on a Sonic game for, those stages are the kind of thing people buy a God of War game for. If you really wanted to play God of War so badly, wouldn't you just buy God of War? Wouldn't it be a better idea for a game company to experiment in some kind of side series? Like with Mega Man; Capcom had a good game that worked, there wasn't much to improve on so they didn't try to reinvent the wheel, and when they did, it was a spinoff game like X or Battle Network. I mean, nobody ever complains that they didn't buy a Mario game to get a parody of survival horror, because they know that that's not a Mario game, that's a Luigi game, so I refuse to believe that nearly as many people would complain that they didn't buy a Sonic title to play a fishing game if it's not really a Sonic game, but rather a Big the Cat game. Instead, they'd complain that nobody wanted any game about Big the Cat, which I think sounds a lot more reasonable.
