Description
here's treat for all you Wolverine and the X-men fans, an early concept design on Forge.now, early on i knew that our Forge wasn't going to be one that was in the comics. he was going to be younger, have no real relationship with Storm and was kinda goofy. he was going to have the one prosthetic leg however....so that's where i started in designing this concept.
execs wanted him to have a goatee and shorter hair, i threw in the goggles ( i think that was my idea). they also wanted to add the stereo typical Native American affectation of the fringe boot.....which i really wanted to stay away from.
but, hey, what the bosses want, the bosses will happily get from me. i was just happy that the generally liked most of the design......especially the robotic leg, which was my favorite part of this design.
color choices were mine, but the application of color was done by Raf Huertado or Kim Bitsui ....sorry, i can't remember.

Honestly, I kind of liked Forge's final character design in the series. But yeah, this is WAY cooler. It's apparent that he's Native American, but it's not beating you over the head with it... by making him wear fringed boots, for example. And that bionic leg is most rad indeed.
Anyway, I'm rambling. I'll just say I love it. The end!

A very interesting design, and I definitely prefer this one. Plus, cool take on the leg.

Honestly, I liked the way Forge was done in the series. True, he wasn't there much; but, whenever he was, I just wanted to give him a big hug, particularly after Logan scratched the Blackbird and that EPIC "OMFG" expression he did made me bust out laughing. Forge won me over in his "adorkableness"! My only problem with Forge was that he had white skin, instead of tan, so he ended up looking Italian instead of Native American.

This design is a lot better than "what the bosses wanted." It seems like they were trying to pass of Forge as a white guy...

Ouu, much as I love his final character design, this is incredibly nifty too. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
... And I must say, I agree about the boot fringe. :/ There's got to be a more interesting way to tell us about his heritage than a giveaway boot.

Aww, thanks. :3 I feel bound to encourage awesome art when I see it - particularly when yer doing such a great job with these beloved characters. Yeah. It's just kind of irritating, like "THIS CHARACTER IS A NATIVE AMERICAN, SEE THE BOOT?" How about maybe some actual character development or writing it in, in a way that matters, instead of a borderline-stereotype design?
Does Logan have a maple leaf tattooed on his forehead?

i know it's a little irritating, but it's best to keep these things in perspective. US pop culture is predominantly a product of entertainment from an anglo viewpoint. that's not surprising, since Anglos dominated the entertainment industry. ....legitimately and illegitimately.
we've slowly become more of a diverse society in the last 30 years, and eventually our entertainment won't solely express a perspective from that dated viewpoint .

True.
Though I have to point out the IRONY of X-Men falling prey to subtle racism. Last I checked, it was about inclusion and equality of everybody; mutants and humans, different races therein...
Well, it will get better. Hopefully even in the second season.
And by the way, have you heard anything about that? Rumor mill says that it's unlikely there'll even be one.

funny you should ask that. just today i discovered via this link [link] about a new ultimate spider man cartoon, that a second season for wolverine and the X-men is unlikely.
and from what i know from insider news, it confirms that it's pretty much over.

hyperjack08 In reply to Shlickdoo [2010-03-07 03:59:42 +0000 UTC]
according to who/what?
if it's different from Forge in the comics....well, it's not that big a deal. because if it's his left or right, it's not intrinsic to who Forge is. for die hard X-men fans who think it is....i'm truly sorry to say it still doesn't matter. because the people in charge of this didn't seem to want Forge from the comics. all they wanted was a character with Forge's name, ethnic background and his powers.
if what you see here was different than the animated show, well then studio made the mistake....because as far as the leg goes at least, this is the official model of that show.

To answer your first question: It's according to his official character description and all the comics I have with him in it.
As for that someone wanting his name and ethnicity and none of his true character in the show, that's just crappy of them for watering him down so damn much.
I was just pointing out what I noticed. Since I'm a fan of Forge, I tend to want to steer others in the direction of continuity.

well as a fan of Forge, let me apologize to you for not getting that detail right. it's something i could've controlled from my end , and i didn't....so sorry about that.
but small details like , even though i can steer them in a particular direction, are still subject to the approval by authorities above me. in this case , the powers that me, i.e marvel. wanted a different version of Forge....and that's what they got.
as a huge comic fan myself, i've had my share of frustrations with Hollywood and their adaptations of comics. it became a lot easier for me when i started accepting that these characters weren't mine anyway....and their owners will do whatever they wanted to with them. so i stopped letting it bother me in anyway, and just accepted a particular version of that character just for me.
i could give pretty much every super hero movie as an example of this....but a great example is Wolverine. the version that's important to me is the 70's-80's version.......to me that's Wolverine, i don't pay the movie(s) any attention at all.

Great sketch, Forge is a decent character. I realized he was different and younger than our Forge but I hated the episode where it seemed like Kitty was his baby sitter while on a mission. Hopefully that will be corrected in later episodes.
Are both his hands real? I like his transforming arm from X-Men Evolution.

that's funny....you just reminded me of the BWS issue of the X-men, "life Death". where he's clearly shown with a prosthetic hand...and arm, right?
i just forgot about that until you reminded me. well, when i designed this, i had both his arms fine. but, if the writers have him with prosthetics underneath that costume....that's the way it is.

BTW, i have no idea how the leg ended up looking like on screen.

It would be upsetting if they did not use that leg design. Really. I think it's great because it looks like something that's possible. That could really work in the real world.

i know that the design was used, i just don't know how it ended up looking on screen animated.
i'm glad you got the real world feel from the design....because that's basically how i approach design when i drawing tech. first i ask myself what's the intended function of this design, and i start from there.
