I disagree - Disney doesn't "have to" to anything. That's like saying Disney made the Lion King to promote animal conservation in Africa, or that Mulan was created to bring attention to the unequal gender roles in China. They made those movies to entertain and to promote life lessons such as acceptance and love through the use of storytelling. I don't think everything needs an agenda behind it, because it might be the "politically correct" thing to do. Disney knows what it's doing, so just let them do it.
If they choose to make a movie with a bald princess for cancer patients, then they should do it because they have faith in the lessons the movie teaches and because the story is good; NOT for the sole purpose of jumping on a hypothetical bandwagon and making another cancer-movie.
I'm not trying to be insensitive, though. I can see the good intentions behind the idea of making this kind of movie, but I more strongly agree with some of the previous comments that Walt Disney is not inclined to make a movie solely to appease a small percentage of its audience. There are plenty of other childhood diseases, why focus on one? The great thing about Disney is that its plethora of stories can appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds because their characters and stories are so well done; no matter the content of the particular movie, Disney manages to relate to and inspire a wide audience. Disney can do this, have this great effect on people, without having to narrow its focus on something so specific. That's why their movies are translated and distributed all over the world.
Just let Disney do what it does best!

Oh, no, no, haha! At least, I don't think so... I hope people don't think that....
I simply used that as a comparison; if every Disney movie were made for political reasons or social trends, things start to look pretty ridiculous, don't they?

There are plenty of people who make assumptions, so it wouldn't surprise me. I accidentally convinced a British couple there was a Cheetah petting zoo in Animal Kingdom. Still can't believe they believed me.

Ohhh you. ;D Brilliant. The world needs its reality leavened with a little more sarcasm, common sense, and brilliant individuals. But I digress! This Disney cancer movie idea has compassionate intentions, but I still stick with what I said above.

It does need it. Too bad that it seems a lot of people are 'sensitive' about being mean.
They deserved it. They were actually holding the map to the park in their hands and didn't even look at it.
I understand it too, but there is more to character design than simply saying 'Look, she's bald like cancer patients.'

Oh, I agree completely. But this doesn't feel like the appropriate thread to begin a politically-charged exchange. We don't want to be "those guys" who get into politics on a somewhat unrelated thread, right? Nevertheless, I appreciate your thoughts on this!

Aaah, I think I get this now? I was reading it like "Silly people to think Disney should make a princess that is not white, heterosexual, beautiful and healthy!" and the "I'm not sarcastic" like "I do actually mean they should not make such a princess, as stated above". Or was that⦠the right interpretation? I've been reading through all the comments and I still don't get it. °-° "Don't you think that Disney have to create a bald princess for little cancer patients" would be easier to understand, even though it leaves the "all cancer patients get bald" thing.
Visually this is pure bull, would still have been if the resolution was better. The edges are weirdly uneven, the colours don't go particularly well together and there's a lot of unsensemaky space. Try looking up some things about typography, look at other peoples work, take time. If you don't want to then don't, you know, make terrible typography things. Publish the idea some other way.

I actually want to prevent that children are going to scold with cancer.
many people do, that's wrong.
Bald is making a bigger impression at people.

Having a gay prince or princess might happen one day, but probably once the political fights simmer down.
After all, Walt Disney World hosts a four day celebration of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexuals in the theme parks.

I dissagree with all this.
There's kids with tons of other dissabilities out there(my nephew has cerebral palsy) just focusing on one group would create more issues than solve things. Everyone will want some sort of "princess" that they can relate to. I don't know why it has to be a girl anyway? Disney has already made Hunchabck of Nottredame, he wasn't exactly pretty.
What I found more concerning is when parents complaind about "Derpy Hooves" from My Little Pony to be scrapped out of the show. Just because the pony is clumsy and has a lazy eye, making her seem mentaly challenged.
Instead of creathing new characters, fight for those that are there and are being frownd upon.

This picture is really fuzzy, you should try cleaning it up to make it look neater.
For your question, no. They should create characters for the plot and movie as itself, not try to appeal to certain demographics. The Walt Disney Corporation have other ways to help people. In addition, creating a character like that can also cause controversy, like when the Princess and the Frog came out.
I also must ask, why bald? As far as I know, not all cancer patients must suffer through chemotherapy and lose their hair. Wouldn't that create a stereotype for all cancer patients? Plus, why wouldn't said hypothetical princess use a wig, which children with cancer have the option to use?

I see.
I must then conclude that I cannot take you seriously, if the reason for baldness is to create the impression of sickness from cancer.
There are many conditions that cause baldness, such as Alopecia. If baldness must represent sickness, than it will affect those who have genetics that cause their loss of hair or had the misfortune of losing hair. The children it was supposed to empower are then exposed that bald=bad.

tanimapa07 [2012-06-28 16:08:39 +0000 UTC]
Maybe not necessarily bald but they should focus on not making all their princesses beautiful. After all, they are putting the stereotype in kids' minds that they NEED to be beautiful or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney and grew up with their movies. I have always loved Ariel the most

That perpetuates the idea that baldness when you have cancer matters, which is what everyone somehow thinks.
I'm a cancer survivor, and I can say, being bald was the last worry on my mind at the time, as it should be. But that's my opinion.

I don't know if Nemo counts, since he's neither a princess nor even a girl, but he's still disabled (though it's pretty hard to tell).
I could accept a bald princess if the STORY is well-done. For me it'll always be about story first.

I think it's funny how people here are assuming that you automatically go bald when you get cancer. Maybe if chemotherapy existed in the times these 'fairy tales' with princesses happened this wouldn't be a silly idea.

Let me answer with a fable:
Mulla Nasrudin and his son were riding the donkey to the town market. A group of people passed. Mulla heard them whisper: "What times are these? Look at those two, have they no mercy on the poor animal?"
Nasrudin, hearing this, tells his son to get off and continue the journey on foot. Another group of people passing by and seeing this comment: "What times are these? Look at this man. His poor son with his frail body has to walk while he at his best age is riding the donkey!"
Hearing this, Nasrudin tells his son to ride the donkey and he himself gets off to walk the rest of the way. A third group of people seeing this remark: "What times are these? This young man is riding the donkey while his sickly old father has to walk!"
Hearing this, Nasrudin tells his son to get off the animal and they both walk with the donkey trailing behind. Another group passing by point to them, laughing: "Look at these idiots. They have a donkey and they are walking all the way to the market!"

The fable means you can't please everyone. And the more you try the worse it gets.
You propably got the idea, because many of the recent female protagonits where from diffrent ethnicities. But they did not do that to appeal to said ethnicities.
If they made a movie with a cancer patient to appeal to cancer patiens it would most certainly turn out to be a desaster.
I am not saying that it is impossible. I have seem many good movies with terminally ill protagonists, including a Charlie Brown movie. It is just a big diffrence if you make a cancer movie, because the story needs to be told or if you make a cancer movie for the sake of making a cancer movie.

Why not? When I was a child a friend of mine had cancer. But he weared a wig until one day I saw him without it. It was a bit shocking in the first moment, but he was my friend and so the shock didn't last long. Playing together was more important back in those days. He died, when he was nine and I was eleven. But I would never forget him.
