solid concept. is this nuclear piston or nuclear turbine? both are viable forms of propulsion for 21st century steam locomotives, but a self contained nuclear electric engine would be nothing short of revolutionary. even a nuclear steam piston engine would be more efficient than current diesels. if you could make the reactor safe for rail transport. china syndrome is bad anyway you look at it.

The idea would be a turbine, although i doubt it would be actually feasible.

give it time. eventually, the powers that be will figure out a way to miniaturize a reactor, and make it safe for rail operations.
