Quick thing I whipped up from the HP 7 text. I'm not talking specifically about this book, but in general. If there's a movie and a book, go read it. It's not that hard and you'll get more out of it. If anything, you'll know how to spell the names properly. Haha.One thing this particularly irks me with is my favorite, Lord of the Rings. Sure the movies are fantastic epics (in my pov), but really need to read the books to fully appreciate it.
Years later, this stamp is still turning out to be true (aka Game of Thrones!)

Honestly LOTR movie was so ridicolous that I laughted in most scenes. I though it was a parody.

You make a good point and I have to agree with this.
Start with the book then to the movie. Their both different. Reading is good for the mind.
I'm going to read the Lord of the Rings books instead.
I also hate it how they say the Batman comics are $hit while the movies are better. If it isn't without the comics, their won't be no movie.

I feel this way about The Shining. Obviously a ton of people really like the movie, and I did too, until I read the book. There are some cool horror parts that were added for the movie, but the ending of the book is decently different (and much better in my own opinion). It's such a shame because I know plenty of people who've seen the movie, but I don't know anyone else who's read the book.

I have watched all the Lord of the Rings movie and I'm in the process of reading the book. I stared two weeks ago, but in my defense it is a big book.

In my experiance when a book is made into a movie they either do a wonderful job (the first Harry Potter movie for example) or they totally kill it (Percy Jackson).
Fyi, the older BBC Narnia movies stay true to the books unlike Disney's version (Caspian was way too old in the movie, he never liked Susan that way, and wtf was going on in Dawntrader?!)

I should link this deviation to anyone who only knows about Wonderland from those (awful) Impostor videogames.
READ THE ORIGINAL BOOK BY LEWIS CARROLL. Wonderland is NOTHING like the Impostor's videogames depicted it as. And the Impostor is NOT the One True Alice.

Agreed! Sometimes I say 'have you read...' and the person is like 'no, but I've seen the film'. Well, I've seen the film too and it sucks -_- sadly, 85% of movies from books absolutely murder the book (the ones that come immediately to mind are the Darren Shan Saga, Inkheart and Beastly. I was in physical pain when I watched those DX)

i tried to read lord of the rings, but in my opinion its boring.
thats how i learned, that not all books are better than its movie. there are different ways to write one, after all. and different tastes.

And I agree with Lord of the Rings. I've read the whole series (the first two books twice, the last book I read once but the ending I, again, read twice). I watched the movies first. But after I finished watching all of them ('cause I own them) I asked my mom if LOTR was a book series, and she said yes. So I automatically went to a library and checked out all three books.xD Then I bought the first two (I couldn't find the last one. I'm still looking for it in paperback!)

Yeah, I can't understand some of the people who don't enjoy reading.
You can get more out of it than you think.
For example, in 11th grade English, we read To Kill a Mockingbird. Every week, the entire class had to take a test on the assigned chapters...except me.
Why? Because the tests were to be sure we actually were reading, and...well...I was reading ahead. Like when the rest of the class was on chapter 2, I was already on chapter 10. (Just as well that the teacher let me forgo the tests; reading ahead made it harder to remember the right details.)
No tests for me during that book, which translated into even more time to read.

(althoug I sypathize with Peter Jackson's motive in adding Tauriel, it still irks me when I see that some people tink she was in the book.

Oh definitely, the book is almost always better than the movie. (Which is why nowadays I try to avoid reading it before I watch the movie.

And what's funny is that there are extremely idiotic people who think that "The Lord of the Rings" was just a movie all by itself (like "Star Wars") and not based upon anything.
Then I tell them, "You just mocked the world's greatest fantasy writer. D:<"
Then they would be like, "Who? What greatest fantasy writer?"
Then I would be like, "J.R.R. TOLKIEN DAMMIT!!!!! THE ONE WHO WROTE LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!"
Then they would give me a blank stare and then say, "Ooohhh. You mean Lord of the Rings was based upon a book?"
Then I would say through clenched teeth, "Yes!"
This seriously did happen and I was kind of in a cranky mood that day. But still, as much as I love the movies of LOTR, I was a little dissappointed that Tom Bombadil wasn't in any of the movie at all

Although to be honest, Tolkien and Peake's works are so different that they can't really be compared. They both rock.

I agree with this almost totally but I have found a few exceptions. Jane Eyre is better watched then read- I read it one night and was so appallled that I had to read Mansfield Park afterwards to remind myself how good a Regency book should be.
Dracula is also better watched. I'm not saying that it is not a good plot- it is, but the film is so much more interesting. To be honest I found the book a bit boring.
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings definatly need to be read though. The film miss out so much of the plot, and add new bits that don't need added, or else wouldn't have needed adding if the plot had been kept the same as the book.
As for Eragon I actually found the book okay, the plot was a bit boring and I knew what was going to happen, and no offence to anyone but I found that I had to change around the sentences and stuff as I read it, and this just bored me so much. Everyone os going to kill me for saying this but I really liked the film- okay it changed the plot a lot but I really loved the film, but I think that is because it had so many good actors in it- Alun Armstrong, John Malcovich, Jeremy Irons and Robert Carlyle in one film. Sorry for rambling.
But yes, if i watch a film I almost always try to read the book first, if I can.

completely agree! Wether it's LOTR or Harry Potter or any other book to movie franchise...The movies are ood in their own right, and if looked at seperately (given the film industries time and budget constraints) they are VERY good, however the books are always so much better!

Ordinarilly, I too prefer the book. However, for some reason, I honestly prefer the Lord of the Rings movies over the books. I guess its times like this when I honestly feel so wierd saying that, evne though it's true :/

Oh my gosh yes.
I've been expressing my opinion on this very strongly for a while. I hadn't even read Eragon when the movie came out, but now that I have, I realize how BADLY they screwed it up. D;
When Inkheart came out, I watched it and was nearly crying at how inconsistent it was with the books, and how it lacked the foundation for Inkspell and Inkdeath (not to mention the actor they chose for Mo was an awful choice).
I won't even get started on Harry Potter. D8 I'm scared for how they'll handle the last book due to the subtle yet important details they left out in previous movies. How they haven't reintroduced Dobby yet in particular bugs me, and Winky was never introduced in the first place. :I
It makes me sad how people will go to the movies and not even realize the story is based off a book. And at that, I haven't seen a movie yet that was better than the book. You can only stuff so much detail into a movie, while the amount of words you can stuff into a book is endless. <3
Once, while on a trip with my youth group, some girls were chatting about movies and brought up Inkheart (movie edition), and how great it was, and then I make a remark about how awful it was when compared to the book. All I got were confused, and possibly disgusted, reactions. Books aren't bad, dangit! I'd rather be stranded on an island with a library than with a computer, video games, or an MP3 player. And anyway, books don't need charging. ;3

I agree with *LissaMonster down there. It would have been nice if the people who did Eragon had actually read the book BEFORE they made the movie. ¬_¬ I love movies based on novels, but NOTHING beats the original book.

I saw the movies before I read the books, but I have read them. X3 The Hobbit as well, which I probably liked more than the others, though perhaps it was becuase I didn't know what was going to happen. xD
But yeah. It bugs me when people say they love LotR and they haven't/aren't going to read the books. They do drag a bit at times, but are definitely worth the read!
