I love these, Holly! I absolutely adore your style. It's been so interesting seeing how your art has evolved in the past year, and the improvement is astounding, especially considering that your art was great before!

Awesome, awesome work!

I love these! I love the appearance the pen gives them. The profile and the girl in the tunic are probably my favorites!
It sucks that your tablet's broken though. D: But these sketches are GORGEOUS!

Drawing-Is-What-I-Do [2013-03-10 00:05:38 +0000 UTC]

These are some really beautiful sketches, Holly! I love black and white sketches. They have such a crisp, fresh look about them. These are all so pretty, but I especially love the way you drew the girl on the extreme right of the page. Did you draw this pose straight from your head? She just looks so natural and relaxed. I also love the way you drew her skirt.

Thanks a lot!
I did, I'm trying really hard to try without referencing for a while. As much as I think it's important to an extent I'd really like to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit! Thanks so much, it really means a lot coming from you!!

I know exactly what you mean. It's so much easier to create a great drawing when you're using a reference! You don't have to work out the perspective or anatomy from scratch because it's already been figured out for you. I've been trying to get better at drawing from my imagination for a while now. One exercise that I've found really helps me is to take any photograph, and then draw the image while looking at the reference. Right after you finish that drawing, draw the same pose/subject again, but this time, from memory! When you compare the two drawings, you'll see how much of the visual information from the original reference image you actually remembered when it was time to draw the same thing straight from your head.

I've also heard many animation artists say that they regularly try and take mental "snapshots" in their heads of interesting poses or people that they see when they're out and about during the day. Later in the evening, they try and recall that same image, and try and draw it from memory.
