Description
Taken today when i was visiting the Elan valley dams. Its really nice this time of the year with the leaves falling off trees and the water finally filling up the resevoirs again.I will probably be submitting a good few photos from my visit today, just need to edit them first and that takes time.
This was the last shot i took of the day and one of my favourites. I was hoping that the water would be flowing over at least one dam and i had given up hope until we arrived at the last one to find that it was pouring over. So i jumped out of the car, grabbed my tripod from the boot and rushed down, over a fence to the edge of the footpath. The light was fading very fast so had to be quick with my shooting. This isnt the original size, the original goes to the left much further. But unfortunately the upper top corner had sky and because of the slow shutter speed it completely blanked out white and i really hate pure white parts on photographs, so i had to crop it in the best way i could so came up with this tilted version.
Photoshop: levels, colour balance, dust removal (bloody hell that took a long time to do)
hope you all like it, and comments are always appreciated

It think the picture works really well and the tones are great. Also the fact that you "had to" crop the shot turned out quite well. It's alot more original now when it's not straight.
I can really recommend buying some ND filters. That way you don't have to spend as much time in front of the computer to remove dust because you don't have to stop down your lens that much to get a slow shutter speed. You also get a sharper picture if you don't have to stop the lens all way down... In many other ways you also gain in image quality if you don't stop down the lens all the way.
I now ND-filters cost quite a lot but they're really practical when one gets used to them. I bought a holder and some filters this summer and couldn't imagine to go photographing without them anymore...
Looks like my 2 cents turned out to be 3... hope you don't mind!
Great shot once again!

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad now that i cropped it in this way because it seems to have worked a lot better than the original version.
This was shot using a x4ND filter to lower help lower the shutter speed and not have to resort to using small apatures. I own 2 ND filters and find them to be very useful, but even at times i prefer to stop down the lens instead of using 2 filters at once in order not to reduce quality too much, also i was a bit pressed for time. I want to purchase some ND gradient filters for such things as sunsets etc.
Cheers again

You are giving me a tough nut to chew on with constructive critique on this But a thing comes to my mind. I don't usually do this, but I read about using neutral density filters for longtime exposures under daylight conditions. I am also sure that I saw one with 2 different densities blending into each other. Something like a 2 level ND with a fading border. You could of course try to shoot a scene like this with just 1 level, but this could turn your dam(n) structure into a shadow. My advise would be to take two shots. Esspecially as you have a tripod. First shoot the dam part lit properly then take a second one of the sky lit right. Put them together and adjust the brightness levels. End
I guess that would let you evade the change of filters or buying expensive 2 level stuff you scarcely need.

Thanks for the comment. I would normally take several different shots using different levels of exposure and afterwards blend them in photoshop but unfortunately i was kinda in a rush and didnt have time to take more than one. I have been considering purchasing gradient ND filters to help properly expose the areas of sky if i use long shutter speeds, but id require a filter adapter, but i guess using multiple exposures works fine when done right

Aye Well you are right of course. Technical and time limits are things we can't do something against.
Good Luck for the next one!

thanks mate, i got a few i thought i may use but have now decided not to. Was only there for about 2 hours and there a bit rushed, but hoping next weekend going again but spending a day there and maybe camping so hopefully get some shots then.
The water was still really low in places which is odd, but still looks really nice, so go and get some shots before the weather really turns bad!

Mm, it's got some stunning shots to offer - last time there I found a waterfall cascading down the hillside, over huge rocks and under trees, sadly I didn't have my SLR then so it was all point and shoot - but it's worth looking out for. If you follow the first road straight, dont turn off anywhere
and it's on the right on a corner, just before a small bridge! Camping's a good idea, get some dusk shots when the light is low and clear. Luck!

Well I'm really glad that the original had that white spot that forced you to crop it out, because I'm simply in love with the titled look. I don't know why...but it's very pleasing to look at and works very well with this piece.

I know the galleries are really messed up. A few of my recent ones dissappeared the other day, but my friends whole gallery keeps disappearing and doesnt return for weeks!
