Description Went for a wonder today to a spot i've visited many times in order to test out my new lens. Each time ive walked there i end up not liking any of the shots but this time i had a different perspective to play with.

It was a miserable day, heavy rain, strong winds and just plain nastiness, all of which i had to walk a mile through to get to. I hope you appreciate what i have to go through to get one shot haha. As the location is a naturally dark place which doesn't allow much light through it doesn't matter if the weathers nice. The sky blanks out near the trees with every shot so you have to avoid using it in the composition.

3 Shots with ranging exposures from -3 stops to 0 merged in photoshop. Levels, black and white colour tone added in ps.

Hope you all like it, comments are much appreciated

What's really interesting about this shot is the sharp crispiness (?) of the fine structure of the moss, in contrast to the silken, smooth flow of the water. A true masterpiece

nice!! what i like most about this is the moss... the contrast on it adds a lot of depth that many of these such shots do not have... great stuff

Thanks, ive taken shots like this many times before and they all are flat and plain, this one does a little in colour so i made it b&w to give it more depth and boost contrast.

I generally don't like bw nature photos since nature means colour but you make wonderful bw out of it. I liked the water flow soooo much.

Thank you, i also prefer sometimes to see nature in its full colour, but sometimes the colours aren't pleasing to the eye and b&w can sometimes add a whole new feeling

I dont know if the B&W really suits this image - it looks like the moss on the sides of the water would look really nice as a bright green.

I like the b&w, it gives it a lot more depth. The colour version has rather murky tones and the moss is far from bright green and i wasnt going to play with colours just to change that.

Oooh I love it, the water looks soft, it makes me want to touch it. I wonder though if the rock on the left takes too much space in the image?

Thanks.
I like the rock how it is and didnt want the water central in the composition. Originally the shot extended atleast 50% of this size to the right which was cropped out to this current size. I wanted to keep that rock as a main part of the shot

Hey cool shot there man. I espessialy like the area where the water is much slower running over the rocks and they look as if they are coated in thick ice.

Cheers boyo, i love using the effect of long shutter speeds on water.

p.s. do you actually want my old camera?

Thanks, that lens is pretty sharp, much sharper than my old 28-90 which was like working with it covered in vaseline .

Yeap, i know what you mean. A few days back i got a chance to handle the 70-200IS 2.4f lens from canon, and compared it to my stocky on the Rebel. Gosh, the L-series glass is like HoLy!

That's beautiful! I love the effect coming off the water.

Do I need photoshop to create that effect? Sorry if that's a noob question but I'd like to know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iamgoatman In reply to GekidoRising [2006-12-10 16:50:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

No you dont need photoshop. The effect is achieved through using long shutter speeds to capture the water in motion. Depends on the speed the water will blur, these being anywhere from 1sec. For this shot i used a 20 second exposure to get the full water movement, i also used a neutral density filter to further darken the image in order to not over expose at such a long shutter speed. Getting the right shutter speed is key to not burning out the white in the water. Hope this answers your question
