Description Went to the beach yesterday with my friend Dave. Was a grand day out and got some pretty good shots. This is one of them taken whilst walking along the beach at borth. I always like the reflections of the multicoloured houses in the pools of water, but this time you cant see them as i prefered the tritone version.

Likely to be more shots from the trip to come.

-----------------------

Canon 20D with Sigma 10-20mm for 6 shot HDR in photomatix. Further editing in photoshop with levels, dodge and burn, tritone gradient map.

Very good shot. Angles and so forth create real balance. I think you could benefit from some cropping here. Maybe take a little off the top and the bottom, to bring focus to the center. Not much, though. The water plays a large role here, well done. Keep up the good stuff.

Lovely photo. I don't know what all of that stuff means that you mentioned at the end, but it certainly made the photo look nice. Looks like a pretty pleasant place to stay.

Wonderful.. great tones and the reflection is beautiful..There is one thing that I find a bit distracting...that V shaped white line over the houses.. I assume it was made by aircraft contrails or some such..

iamgoatman In reply to davincipoppalag [2007-04-04 22:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I dont like that V shape either, but couldnt be bothered to edit it out, but every time i look at it i notice it more. I think i may try fading it slightly. But yeah, its an aircraft trail, it actually formed a large noughts and crosses shape in the sky, tried to wait until the clouds had covered it, but obviously it still remained in shot.

lovely job here, the detail is wonderful, the tritone really suits it and the hdr picks out all the detail. i'd have been tempted to burn the dark elements in the foreground in even more, but i'm a high-contrasty man.

how do you find that sigma lens? i'm thinking of getting one when i upgrade to a d200 and i've read mixed reviews of it... even so, a 15-30mm equivalent surely must be worth it. come across any weak points?

Sun-Seeker In reply to kidscruff [2007-04-25 02:40:38 +0000 UTC]

I can give the sigma the thumbs up and the thing is popping up on peoples cams all over DA now. I never shoot at f4 to f9 so would no notice if there was any side blur there. Its fairly flare resistant sharp and you can hand hold it down to 1/20th of a second!

iamgoatman In reply to kidscruff [2007-04-04 19:16:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad you like it. I would have probably carried on dodging and burning and such until the cows came home but decided to leave it as it is for the mean time. May touch it up some other time.

I find the Sigma lens to be great. Cant really think of any faults, and if there were any they were not that big. I picked up mine for £250 on ebay which was pretty good value for money and was brand new. Its really sharp as well. One thing i can think of is at large apertures, F4 to about F9 and close foreground is part of the shot, the corners can become slightly blured, but not very bad and not expected with such a wide lens. Id recommend it, but its very wide so id advise testing one first as its not to everyones tastes.

nah man, very wide makes me happy. my 11-22mm zuiko ends up at 22mm equivalent with my olympus and thats not wide enough for my liking, so the idea of a 15mm equivalent makes my heart sing. i'd expect a little vignette blur with a lens that wide though.

and as for the dodging, you're probably very wise not to take it further. my darkroom technician and photography tutor both tell me to manip until you're happy with it, and then take two steps backwards in the process, and then it'll look right. i never listen to them, foolishly.
