I love the fact that his arm blocks us from seeing her face.
Now to be honest, and this may sound really weird, I think she is the focus of this image...not the guy nor his performance. She is in the light...
I don't know, you may see it differently but what I like most about this image is that it's open to interpretation Great stuff

yes, good point. she is in the light and my eye
goes right to her. but then it swims around and
takes in the whole scene.
they are both the subject i think.
i love the arm blocking her face too.
thanks for the comment.

My pleasure. You're a brilliant photographer. I just had a look through your gallery and I'm stunned. Are you a professional photographer or is it just a hobby? Anyhow, you're fantastic!

I mean, do you work as a photographer or is photography a hobby of yours?
My avatar is a yin-yang with two dragons The yin-yang is my favourite symbol; the meaning of it has always fascinated me.
Hehe, this is really strange, I was just about to say the same thing about your signature. "Love is the greatest thing we have" -- it is so true; it's a pity that some people forget this... Love is vital for the human soul.

Well you're damn good at it. Honestly. Your photos have something in particular, something which I haven't seen in so many other photographs.
Something tells me that what I see in your photos is the passion with which you capture moments. You love it, don't you? You love the feel of the shutter, the sound of when a picture is taken... you love stopping time
Telling me that you work your ass off 16 hours a day with no pay (except selling the odd print) makes me believe that your job satisfies you emotionally and mentally, not necessarily materially... and that you're happy with it; for you it's spiritually rewarding.
You're following a dream (as I suppose), you're living it and that's very admirable. I've always believed that people should follow their dreams no matter not. But so many of them burry them away...
Ahh well, sorry I got carried away. It wasn't me, blame your photos!

it is very interesting to see your mind working - just the other way round. The Artworks are not sorted after the artists but after the date of submission so I started with your newest and go back in time. Really interesting.
But now to the photo: I like it. It looks so unreal, like a scene from one of the billion-dollar rip-off productions. He looks like the evil one and the girl on the back is going to be his victim... somehow. The light is fantastic. Fantastic picture!

not sure what you mean 'interesting to see your mind working'.
this wasn't a planned photo shoot. these are candid shots of
members of PURE in the dressing room getting ready to
go onstage and perform. it's straight photo-journalism.
i had no ideas or concepts - just recording what i saw.
i really like how they turned out, the light esp, yes.
thank so much, dear!

you submitted the photos one after the other and every time you added other comments... slowly figuring out what you really think about those people and their perfomances. But as I got all the submissions listed after their date of submission -starting with the newest one - I could see your mind working backwards.

ohh! from the comments.. i seeeeeee....
that's interesting. yes. i didn't really start to see
'beauty' until i posted the 3rd shot.
it's like it started to seep into me
after viewing and working on the
shots alot. and his face is what
got me.
this is all kind of tribal, y'know?
but the beauty.. i still can't articulate that.
it goes deep into feeling for me. i feel something beautiful in this.
maybe.. a need to connect.. no,.. i won't even yet try.
it's not in a place of words for me as of now.
thanks for clarifying, love.

hmmm there are some things which are similar to tribal traditions, yeah.
I'm sorry but I don't agree with your words... well they are your feelings but mine are different. The only thing I see in there are depression, pain, helpless feelings... maybe not in this one but in the other ones. Sorry... I think I forgot how to cry during the past 3 years.

yes, well i think that beauty is not always pretty or joyous at all.
i think sorrow can be extraordinarily beautiful.
pain, depression, helplessness.. yes..
deep emotions of all kinds, i can find beauty in.

Powerful image!!!!!!!! It says so much about judgement in general - expressed so well by the composition of his arm and the girl behind him....she is faceless, her visible skin is untouched by tattoos or piercings and it looks as if her head is pointed down, having nothing to say but taking no part...having no judgement. Because just as everyone else in the world, who are we to judge?

well, apart from this being a wonderful spontaneous shot, --with his arm in front of her face, the deep-dark emotion on his face, her looking down, the darkness around them and b/w and the texture of the wall adding so much to the overall mood--, I can't say I'm disturbed by the subject.. it's about choice. the fact that he's doing it to himself makes it much less disturbing. it becomes something about experience, crossing boundaries, freeing yourself from inherited fears, tearing down your own walls in some or other way.. still he looks tense, there is excitement in the air, at least in this shot..
but I don't think it's a good way to free one's mind. I browsed their site (whay are they called pure? made me expect something.. different), and what bothered me the most is that nearly everyone is smiling to the objective.. to show that it doesn't hurt perhaps, but making it look unreal, superficial. I'd prefer this shot to all what they've got there. I'd do it (not that I'd do it) to feel like him in this shot, not like them. and not to prove anything to anyone. that's one of the moments you should spend with yourself, in yourself, exploring yourself.. I wouldn't ask him the reason, I'd ask him what he discovered.. if he did that is..
one more important thing.. your choice to submit this. the fact that you're not bothered by the expectable reactions of the common audience (eew + ouch) and be yourself. I adore that

P.U.R.E. = People Undergoing Real Experiences.
yes, noel mentioned for him it's partly about going past limits
and it's also a huge rush for him - a pleasurable thing.
pain and pleasure here are one.
(as you surely must know
they can be.)
i agree that it can in some cases be about impressing others, proving oneself to others..
i have no need whatsoever to prove myself in this way. but i test my limits
in other ways.. photographically, for one. to each his own means of expression.
there was no doubt i needed to put this in my gallery.
i knew some would flee and that is a good thing.
i only want people around who can accept
any direction i may find myself being
led into. i can't stick to just one thing
simply because many people prefer it.
this is all largely choiceless for me you know.
i merely follow what makes me think
what makes me question
what makes me ache..
i follow.

grrr, I wrote a very long message and all gone now .. *sigh*
pure.. I see, it makes sense actually, not a bad name. otherwise I have a general problem with the word 'pure'. as in, 'what the hell is pure' (in human behaviour I mean)
>i merely follow what makes me think, what makes me question, what makes me ache..
I love this, especially the "this is all largely choiceless for me" part. my favourite game. I wait for such things, -think,question,ache.. shiver- and follow them. my only faith lies in that path I guess. I could (and usually do) blindly follow that path, even if I don't like it.. choiceless, as you say
pain and pleasure.. *sigh* this was the longest part I wrote.. ok, shorter version. yes, I know they can be the same, or rather, they can simultaneously reside in you, something I learnt quite recently, and something that gave the inspiration for my devs schism and yin yang..
here I mean real pain of course, mental or physical, not depression. depression and pleasure I think I always knew
I downloaded all 17 cd's btw, I'll tell you what they are when I return home

i think the lack of judgement is both good and bad. it helps keep you separate from your work. sometimes, it's hard to photograph a subject objectively when you have certain feelings. a good photojournalist knows when to be a fan/friend/supporter/etc and when to be just that -- the photojournalist.

nice tattoos he has.
I've always found this sort of thing fascinating, but in the same way you love looking at a car accident. If you look at this realistically, it's no different then piercings, tattoos and even waxing body parts. Pick your pain, it's all the same. The things people go through for personal reasons baffles me!! I've got many piercings and through I can't explain way I love them, I do. I definetely support those who want to express themselves to "themselves" in any way possible. Go hard.
Great picture, love the nearly naked "mystery" woman. Makes you wonder what she has to show you.

adds to a feel of grit & grunginess which supports the entire scene and
photograph well. just my opinion. thanks for yours.
