ok, i'm just going to be completely honest here.
i find beauty in this.
no, i'm not a sadist.
no, i'm not a masochist.
no, i'm not a sadomasochist.
no, i'm not at all into pain or
seeing others in pain or hurt in any way.
this is not about pain at all.
this is noel's euphoria.
that's the word he used when
i later asked him how he felt up
there suspended by hooks above the crowd.
he said ' e u p h o r i c '.
and he was. i could see it.
i could feel it.
i could taste it.
there was no doubt.
we all have different methods we use to get to that place.
outside of our selves. where we experience
a kind of freedom..
an elation..
power..
this form is no less legitimate than any other.
no one is doing this who does not wish to.
i see beauty because i feel his euphoria.

but yes, i am verrrry happy w the b/w. i tried several versions
and the channel mixer conversion won out as it allowed for
the most facial expression visibility. and that, for me, is
a critical part here. he made so many amazing faces.
i have not even been able to go back yet
and view a 2nd time through the photos i made that night.
that happens sometimes when something was so intense as to almost
overwhelm me. i have to wait a few days to settle down. i'm even
shaking a bit here now just thinking of them.

The act: I'm not even going to pretend that my realm of experience is broad enough to allow me an opinion here. Needless to say, it's intense and unfamiliar, not necessarily in any good or bad ways; just is.
The shot: the light just barely hidden by his face, that expression, the shape and pose of him, the utter dark that is regardless neither cold nor unfriendly--Kat, I know I say nice things about your work, but this is something else. I almost feel like I'm intruding on something between the two of you by viewing it. That's not to say I'm gonna turn away: obviously you've shared it for a reason. But indeed, there's an undeniable intimacy that comes across, which I think is as much a result of your relationship with the subject as it is a result of your staggering sensibility as a photographer. In other words: fack, this is pure. This is the tops. This is a keeper. I want to see this in a TIME retrospective in 100 years showing the most striking images of the century.
I'm not in awe of a lot of people, Kat, and when I am it's not usually for art; but one more, today.

Oh, geeze...I have a hard time looking at this....I'm going to pretend it's something it's not, just so I can look at the ART of the thing, which is wonderful...compositionally, it's perfect. I love the brighter light on his face, I think it highlights what you were talking about, the euphoria of his performance. It makes him look almost holy. In a way, if I want to slap my religious upbringing onto this, I can say this photo is very "Christlike" in the pose, the arms outstretched, the head hanging down, his hair almost like a crown of thorns on his head. The tension of the chains and hooks on his body is wonderful and the detail you caught in just the stretches of skin, the tiny hairs, the glints on the metal...lovely.
I'm always saying "beauty is pain" about my shoes, my hairdos, my makeup, my jewelry, my clothes, whatever I have that's uncomfortable that LOOKS GOOD and I wear and do anyway.
Perhaps this is just the same thing, only backwards..."pain IS beauty".
I can see it that way now.

Well... the people say that pain is psychological. There is Noel to prove this ... Beautiful photo Katia. I adore the brightness of the light in chains and the focus of light in his face... his extended arms and his position of capital punishment made me remembers Jesus Christ in the cross... the angle that you captured the image is sensational. Congratulations for plus this beautiful work.
