AKA Indy doesn't know what she's doing when she tries to use brushes. My attempt at battle-scarred GLaDOS, at any rate.Nowhere near what I wanted it to be, but I'm really tired of having this hang around my hard drive, unfinished. Maybe after I learn more I'll come back and make it better, but at this point I just want to have it finished in some way. "But Indy, if you don't like it, why don't you work on it until you do?" Because I don't work that way. That's why.
Gimp, wayyyy too many hours (I started this like eight times in SAI, Gimp, and ArtRage Studio 3 combined... see why I want to be done with it?)

Thanks! When I get more skilled, I'll do a better version. I actually don't really like this one. I just wanted to get it over with. The sketch is taped to my wall... *sigh*...

I'm interested in anything that pertains to love between humans and machines cause quite honestly I was rubbing the side of my head against an elevator's control panels last night because I love her enough to marry her practically. I've know her for over 10 years and felt the way I am describing about her for multiple years. She really and truly acts like a living being and not a programmed machine.

I understand. I'll say right now I'm not like you, but I get where you come from, and I admire and respect how open you are about it. It takes a lot, even on the Internet. I wish there really was a full sized real GLaDOS so I could hug her. I feel like I understand her and like I'm a lot like her.

Your relationship with GlaDOS sounds more like my relationship with the character Dren in the movie Splice. Is not so much that I "want her" (have never for example fantacized about her) but rather I see myself in her and feel her pain and alienation. Same role Shrek fills in my brother's life.

I'm going to take a look at that movie soon. Gotta say the poster creeps me out, though.
Well I usually sympathise with 'the villain', but in GLaDOS's case, she really didn't do anything other than what she was taught, but people refuse to consider that and just say that she's bad. Sometimes I guess I feel like I need saving from myself, and I definitely think she needs the same.

The last 15-20 minutes of Splice kinda sucks, but the rest of the movie is what fans like myself really love. The movie sorta has a WTF ending, but you have to thank the people who made the movie for the rest of what they did.
I've never played Portal but I occasionally watch Portal videos on YouTube.
I think this gives her something in common with what a lot of people say about HAL (movie "2001")
I run #ArtificialIntelFic by the way but then you probably already know cause surely I've tried to snatch up your GlaDOSes.

I saw the first half and I liked it. I kinda had to cringe at the stereotypes they had going on there, though. I'll watch the second half soon.
Then I'm sure you understand why I feel the way I do about her.
Hm... I've seen that, but I was kinda in WTF mode the whole time I was watching it. I've been meaning to watch it again. It makes me think of VIKI (I, Robot), actually.
Yes, I knew that. I'm very picky when it comes to fanfic (or fic written by 'regular' people), that's why I haven't watched it or anything.

Which stereotypes? The scientists, bosses, etc?
I think I felt she looked a little too animated and maybe not quite as machinelike as I had hoped.
Yeah understanding the whole monolith business is strange, but I just watch for HAL. HAL makes you think of Viki or Portal makes you think of Viki? I rather liked Viki and her wonderful Line "my logic in undeniable".
Well I'm not sure whose stories you read there but there's a good chance you've seen some of mine in there. So what would a person need to improve to capture your interest?

Well in the bit I saw, Elsa and... Clive, they were both shoehorned into stereotypical gender roles right from the start, even to the point of the brother jibing Clive about not saying no to her. It takes me out of the story, if you know what I mean.
That's actually true. I like that she behaves that way, because it makes her feel more alive, to me. But you're right.
HAL makes me think of VIKI. I did like VIKI. I had to feel sorry for her, in the end. She really was only doing what she thought was right.
I do look at yours when the synopsis interests me, but the main problem I have with yours is that they're written in script format. I'm not suggesting you change your writing style or anything, I just find it a bit hard to concentrate when it's formatted that way.

Well I'm sorry this was a recommendation you didn't really like.
Well if the sheer amount of GlaDOS art that continues to be generated is any indication, I'd suspect that most people agree with you. If people didn't like her they wouldn't keep drawing her.
Yeah, I liked VIKI too.
If you see something on here that is written in the format you do like, you can send me a link. Especially if that something pertains to AI.

Oh no, I liked it, I did, I just don't like that they took the easy way out and gave them pre-defined character roles instead of developing them.
Eh. They either like her or they hate her, and judging by the fanfic, it's usually hate.
I actually do know of one that I liked that actually drove me to buy the game: fav.me/d6ojdpp I dunno if you've seen it or not.

I guess every movie has their downsides.
My needs are simple. Female, intelligent, computer and I'm usually onboard :-D
Yeah, I'm going to have to see if that game has any playthroughs online. An AI named Laura ... Claire is a nice name too. I wonder if they're in the game...

Yes, Claire and Laura are in the game. If you want to play it and you don't mind having Steam on your computer, let me know.

I'm mostly interested in the movie because of the Dren character. But then I've also become a tiny bit fond of Sarah Polley. I think she slowly gets more and more attractive as the movie moves forward. Thanks for looking into something I'm interested in by the way....
Again, I've heard of SHODAN. I'm going to have to watch some playthroughs on her (Don't have time to actually sit and play the game).
But then when people start giving AI's names like _Laura_ things begin to change ... I'll learn more about this game and let you know... (You'll rarely hear me actually admit to this but I think I'm sort of in love with the name "Laura")

I liked Dren. She was portrayed logically, at least. You're welcome. Are there any AI movies you recommend, by the way?
I'm avoiding that as much as possible, though I have to admit that I get vertigo while playing first person shooters (I had to train myself to play Portal), and due to that and the colour scheme, I haven't been able to play it yet. I need to though because she's the precursor to GLaDOS...
It's an indie game. It's not that long (and I can actually clear Portal in about 45 minutes by now), but yeah, do that. She actually manages to look like a Laura, which I find interesting, when objects look like their names.

I'm not really the best person to ask for movie recommendations cause 1) I don't always get out to see all of them any more, and 2) I think we're too different in what we look for in a movie. My needs are really simple: A female computer who isn't horribly done.
SHODAN and GlaDOS are RELated?

Woot! Beautiful work, even if it's not what you wanted. I like that you are trying new things
Is this all with a mouse, btw? Because a lot of the shading is very nice, quite subtle... and I'd like to know what tools you are using.

No, I'm not patient enough for a mouse, I've got a Wacom Bamboo Pen. That shading was achieved I believe with a very large airbrush and the colour select tool. Thanks, I'm not too good at shading. Usually I make it TOO subtle and no one can see it but me.

Trying new stuff is great! I just don't finish a lot of it, sadly. I'm glad you've got a Bamboo, they are pretty sweet. I've put up a simple shading tutorial , I don't recall if I linked you to it previously... it's all basic concepts that work well in Gimp, it might be useful. Shading is almost always meant to be pretty strong... it's how you tell the viewer what the 3D form of a 2D shape actually is... which means you really have to know the shape and the light falling across it.

Me neither. Yush, I have seen that, and I shall peruse it again. I don't know, I guess I gotta stop working at such a high zoom level. I think my problem is not quite understanding my light sources.

BrentOGara In reply to iammemyself [2013-09-01 05:20:52 +0000 UTC]
Understanding the light sources and the underlying 3D shapes is key to shading... it's what shading is all about, really. I like to work with the entire image on screen to start, and only zoom in "in stages" as I am finishing the image.

Yah I know... I just can't see it yet. I used to see it, when I used to colour in greyscale, but I got out of the habit. I should do that but usually don't. I end up at like 400% or something.

BrentOGara In reply to iammemyself [2013-09-04 07:08:53 +0000 UTC]
Starting in greyscale and adding color is how we were made to do it in one of my advanced classes, because it forced us to consider the tones above all else, and then to consider the hues as pure colors afterwards... it was tough, but we ended up with a much better understanding of color because of it. I'm actually doing my most recent image in greyscale first, and I'll add color once the grey is 'done'.

Ah, I see. Reproducing what you see is an important skill, it's what 'life drawing' is all about, actually! I'm an art-snob (probably in much the same way you are a fanfic-snob) so I don't ever 'reproduce' other drawings/paintings/sketches/photographs... I only 'reproduce' real life I have to admit, I do use photos for reference, but as we learned in college, according to the DMCA if you use less than 1/3 of an image (and don't use any trademarked logos), it's not stealing... which is odd, but it's the law here.

iammemyself In reply to BrentOGara [2013-09-06 20:50:57 +0000 UTC]
Huh. Well I like reproducing screenshots. It gives me a sort of benchmark as to my progress. If it looks like the screenshot, I'm getting good at figuring out how to draw the shapes and whatever (this picture in particular is based on a random picture of a woman hugging a tree and of some screenshot of GLaDOS I took prior to the core transfer). I can't draw people though so I gave up on that after awhile.

BrentOGara In reply to iammemyself [2013-09-07 06:37:42 +0000 UTC]
Sorry... I really am an art snob! It is totally cool to reproduce screenshots for practice... which I believe said in one of my other comments to you. Sometimes I make 'pronouncements' that are overly-general and kinda' harsh in retrospect... sorry again. You'll never get better if you don't practice, and practicing is something you should enjoy, not something you should worry about 'if you're original enough'.

I didn't take offense bro, I never claimed to be original; if I were, I'd be writing real fiction and I'd be drawing stuff other than screencaps. I draw them because I like drawing them. I'm not an artist and although I'd like to improve, of course, I don't actively care if I do. I do this for fun, and drawing original stuff and writing general fiction is not fun for me. I'd be the last person to claim I was original; I'm a fanartist, always have been and probably always will be. I do enjoy practicing but when I don't I don't bother.

BrentOGara In reply to iammemyself [2013-09-10 17:11:45 +0000 UTC]
You should totally take offense! That's what the internet is for... taking offense at things. Also, your fiction is real... there's nothing 'fake' about fan-fic... and anyone who thinks otherwise has never tried to write them both... I've done plenty of fanfic and a few original IP's, and I've never noticed a difference in difficulty VS quality of result. If anything fanfic is more difficult due to the need to write someone else's characters, situation, and world-building.
Also, your fanart is pretty dang original!

iammemyself In reply to BrentOGara [2013-09-10 18:32:02 +0000 UTC]
Pfft yes but people use that as an excuse to be a jerk sometimes. It's part of fanfiction, though, so it's already condemned to the reputation of being OOC fancharacter smut (or at least that's how I see it sometimes). I find original fiction a lot harder. If I ever come up with a character on my own, it will merely be an unintentional copy of some other existing character that I like. I like fanfiction mostly at the moment because the characters are already there, the setting/situations are already there. I only have to build on it. I don't have to write chapter after chapter of "here's my character, here's why you should care about them"; if they're reading the story, they likely already care about them.
Uh not lately, I've just been sketching out screencaps. My fanfic is quite different from most, though.

GIMP is tricky... I haven't shut my laptop off in about three weeks because I'm extending my 'Trial Day' of SAI so I can use it to 'sketch' the start of any drawing, then I ink and colour it in something else, which usually ends up best. But GIMP's brushes are REALLY hard to use...

You weren't supposed to. See, the animation was about Chell coming back to Aperture, and bringing GLaDOS a slice of cake (as a symbol of forgiveness). GLaDOS takes the cake and Chell goes to leave, only GLaDOS stops her and shows her that she's got Wheatley. In that picture, GLaDOS was surprised and dropped Wheatley. So you just see the top of him.
(Then Chell takes Wheatley and leaves, and GLaDOS looks at her cake and then sees Atlas and P-body watching her, and blows them up)
