Another LGBT WOF Week Β piece, ft the song I've been listening to on loop while I drew it! I've liked Starflight / Flame as a ship for a while; a love story that is both gay and centered around recovering from physical trauma and the mental scars of it would be... well, a very powerful love story; the war is over, the scars remain, but they're healing.
No mature content warning bc they're scars, not gore.

Thank you!! And yeah, being a grump doesn't mean he deserves to be hated. Truth be told, I just don't think Tui is very good at writing a grouchy not-antagonist character.

The glasses Starflight's wearing are a nice touch...are they to cover his eyes? You should do a fullbody picture of him!

More to protect them from light than to cover them! He doesn't mind people seeing them after all, and they're healed enough to touch (as far as eye-touching when you have claws goes). He can also manage indirect light fine, but direct light (since he can't close his eyelids completely with the burns) can be painful and irritate the already sensitive membrane. So he wears sunglasses to keep the light out of his eyes during the day, has to use eye drops to keep them from getting irritated, and wears a blindfold to sleep at night in order to keep him from getting any stray dust or such in his eyes, since then he won't know until he wakes up!
...the story skimmed over the realistic bits of him being blind, imo, and it matters a lot to me to have an accurate representation when possible.
I also will be doing a full-body pic of him later on; I'm doing an alphabetical Wings of Fire challenge that took a brief break for the LGBT Week, and while I'm only in the A's for now, I'm hoping to stick with it all the way through!

My thoughts on Starflight being cured is whether or not Starflight wants to be cured. There is very little healthy representation of blind people in fiction, especially not blindness from trauma; I'd rather disability aids be created rather than cures being found. Turtle could, say, enchant a ring to read words aloud when Starflight runs it over text, so he can read scrolls again instead of needing someone to read to him. It's better writing and better representation to have the world adjust to the character's disability rather than have the character remove their disability in order to interact with the world. It's a little thing, but writing stories where disability aids are normal can have great repercussions on the 'real world' - people being used to seeing and understanding disability in fiction makes it easier to see and understand it when you meet disabled people!

Yeah, that's very true (plus it'd be a bit of a cop out if anybody could easily recover from an injury like that; kinda undermines the original impact), although I think seeing as he did have sight originally, Starflight probably would want to be cured if he was given the option to do so without any negative consequences, unless of course he'd found a method that worked better for him. Someone like Tamarin, on the other hand, being born blind (as far as we know) would probably not want to change...I actually started writing a scene where Anemone was going to enchant a necklace to give Tamarin sight as a surprise gift for her, only for it to backfire terribly because Tamarin ended up freaking out from the sudden sensory overload, so Anemone quickly ripped it off, apologised profusely, and the two reconciled...

Flame had plenty of chances to kill Starflight, but he didn't. He was just angry bc Starflight meant his life was wasted. The war is over, things get easier. It's two ages that aren't creepy together (more than most canon ships have) and gives closure to two characters kind of pushed aside by their scarring and disability. There aren't a ton of characters the same age to work with.
