Description
Β Because if the king falls - this game is over ~ SebastianI rendered this at 1k samples with Blender Cycles. Black Butler, or more specific the quote above, inspired me to do this. Everything was modeled by me, of course.

Kinda funny - I did a pretty similar picture once. Only in my case the king has fallen and the Queen is still standing. I guess chess does inspire all of us sometimes
I think your models are pretty well done (much better than mine), I feel like they are a bit too soft around the edges but endamist already commented on that. Another way to achieve harder edges is edge creases (shift+e) - they don't need extra geometry have to be used with care.
I'm also not too fond of the rendering, it seems rather noise and I think it is a bit dark (too little contrast, especially since the black pieces seem to "fade" into the chessboard almost) - but that is personal taste and maybe that was what you were going for. I do know Black Butler by name but not what it is about, so maybe I am missing something.

Thank you
The models do have some edge creases, but you're right, the edges are still pretty soft. Black Butler has a quite dark storyline (it's about an orphan trying to get revenge for the death of his parents with the help of a demon in short) and that was also what I was trying to express with the image. But maybe it could use a bit more contrast.

The chess pieces look fantastic.
And together with the mirror of the board
and the dark tone, this piece of art has a great atmosphere.

excellent job on modeling those chess pieces.Β I did notice one thing.Β the bottom of your pieces could use an edge loop near the edge because you can see where blender tried to smooth bottom and gave it this sort of look like the edges of a stake knife.Β Something I learned with blender is that if you add and extra edge loop right at the edge it helps prevent that especially when you are using subsurf modify.Β Β Other than that this is excellent.Β

Thank you, I actually did that, but sometimes things just don't work. I really appreciate the tip though.

you really did a great job on the modeling of those pieces.Β I guess if the extra edge loop didn't help with smoothing out the bottom there is another trick you could try.Β if it were still upright selecting all of the bottom verts and doingΒ S-Z-0Β that would set all of the bottom at the same level on the z axis.Β But that might also create to flat a surface.Β ah well.... food for thought yes?Β Β Β still great job.

I was able to change the problem by scaling down the bottom edge loop. I also improved the materials

I use Blender. It has two render engines, the Internal and the Cycles render engine. My favorite one is Cycles, because setting up the materials there is somewhat easier as I find. Thank you, btw

I really like the board design. Would love to have a real one like that.
