Description
Colored pencil drawing of a Pantalan Leafwing dragonet. Specifically, this dragon is a young version of Hemlock, father of Sundew and husband of Belladonna. Hemlock has played a minor role in the Wings of Fire books so far, but his daughter is a major character and his wife is second in command of the Leafwings. Anyways, he's a character that I think has potential for an interesting headcanon or backstory, so I came up with one.
Hemlock has dark green scales and can easily disappear into the shadows. I gave him a row of brighter green scales to mimic light in a forest or jungle and further aid in camouflaging himself. It's mentioned in the book he wears a small white shell necklace. My idea is that he's had the shell since he was a dragonet and has continued to wear it as he's grown in size, eventually stringing longer pieces of cord through it. When Hemlock was young, he would go to the shores of the island whenever he could safely avoid being noticed by Hivewings. One day, his parents explained about the origin of seashells when he brought one home. They would tell him that the washed up shells once held life. They said that Queen Wasp and her command had destroyed so much of the continent, the remaining trees and forest are like those shells, hollow of what they once contained. He keeps the same shell to this day as a reminder of the destruction and cruelty the Hivewings inflicted, and it is part of the reason he is as vigilant and stoic as he is.
The title is inspired by the Dayseeker song "Hollow Shell".

It's a funny coincidence that I find this after I started imagining writing something about my LeafWing OC Snakeroot (Sundew's grandmother, Belladonna's mother).
I like this idea for Hemlock's backstory a lot, to the point I kinda want to show it taking place in the aforementioned fanfiction if you don't mind. (I wanted to ask first, before just featuring your headcanon in action.) But if not, no worries.

That should be fine; you can use it in your story as long as you credit me for the headcanon.

Since part 2 will be the one that features your headcanon, here's part 1 in case you were interested in this story when I first mentioned it to you.
Wings of Fire - Fugitives (part 1 of 3)4962 A.S.
Part 1: The Last Princess
SNAKEROOT
The dragonet didn’t understand why the dark world around her was shaking so much. It’d been like this for a time that her mind in this unhatched state couldn’t understand, and she wanted it to stop. One minute she’d been still, the next she’d been shaking and feeling like she was floating in air forever.
If the dragonet could give words to her thoughts, she’d be thinking something like this:
What is happening?
Why am I flying when I haven’t hatched?
When can I go back on the ground?
I’m so scared!
But since she was too young to form words in her mind, the dragonet only understand that something was carrying her and that it was dark and wet inside… whatever she was in. She somehow knew

Okay scratch that. I've gotten a title for it. Fugitives feels like the perfect word for it's title since it describes Snakeroot, Hemlock, and Sundew so well.

Yeah, I had every intent to credit you whenever I start this.
I'm just struggling to come up with a good title, as I pointed out here before I actually start it.

I love how richly colored your pencil drawings are. Lovely work! It's cool to see that you drew Hemlock instead of the fan favorite, Sundew.
